Dianne:
2 of my local newspapers frequently run stories about local small
businesses, entrepreneurs and home-based businesses, so I thought my story
would be newsworthy too. No luck so far. 1 paper is actively soliciting
stories about successful small businesses, or unusual businesses, etc.,
and I thought for sure they'd be interested in mine.
A friend of mine who is a newspaper editor told me to NEVER call a paper
with a story/press release, that it would just get the editor angry that I
interrupted his/her day. He told me editors/reporters would rather receive
info in the mail so they can read it at their leisure. So I haven't phoned
anyone – yet. Based on reading other business stories, I worded my 2 page
double spaced release so it would be ready to print as is (I studied
journalism in college), hoping that a busy editor would want to use my
story simply because they'd have little work to do on it.
I'm going to try once more with the story I've written, but this time I'll
include 5 magazine articles about my business. I'll let you know if I get
a response this time.
