Can I get some help with the garamont font on 2.2? I can't seem to get the
special characters, quotes, etc. to print to my postscript printer. I went
to the store to show them the problem but there 2.2 worked fine. I thought
I copied all the new font files OK and I updated the files and the PSfonts
directory, yet I must not have something right. I would appreciate either
some help or the use of a pen to manually write in these caracters!!

The store probably wasn't using a PostScript printer. The PS data files for
Garamond do not contain the special characters and so on. What happens, is
that CG fonts cannot be printed to PS printers. They just don't work. Times
and Triumvirate are already in the printer so PgS just has to point the
code to the correct font. For Garamond, we had to cheat and create a PS
downloadable file. Unfortunately, the PS downloadable doesn't contain the
full character set. You're not doing anything wrong, it's the fault of the
PS file. It's high up on the list of things to be looked at. Sorry for all
the confusion (and frustration) you must have experienced. The manual shows
the available characters in an appendix.

Mike, thanks for the reply. The new program is great and I'm looking
forward to the hot links addition. The store was using the exact same
printer as mine (NEC 2 90) but perhaps they were using the HP emulation or
something. Anyway, take care.

Speaking about available characters:
Being a foreigner it is VERY important to me, that the various fonts
include national characters (in my case Danish/Norwegian characters 159,
191, 197, 198, 229, 230). These characters are fully supported by the
Amiga, but only fully in the CS Times and CS Triumvirate fonts and not in
the remaining 8 standard PgS fonts.
This was rather frustrating to discover, when I purchased PgS a year or so
ago, and I immediately faxed you a message about it, but as far as I can
tell no action was ever taken to remedy the situation. These letters are
not exotic, seldomly used letters, and not having access to them have made
painfully clear to me, how often they are used in my native language.
I am considering purchasing the Font Plus Pack and the Fonts Pack 1, but
the file INTRO.TXT in the libraries only mentions the font names.
Would it be possible for you to upload a file supplementing INTRO.TXT
(which also may need updating) describing for each of the fonts which
characters are missing from the fonts?
Please, note that some of the standard fonts contain screen displayable
characters that are blank, when printed.

First of all, the eight PgS format fonts which are included with PageStream
are intended mainly for display use, so they do not have complete character
sets. They will not be updated. We are trying to concentrate on our newer,
higher end fonts like CS Times and so on. If you have a PostScript printer,
you will get the standard PostScript characters printed out if you buy the
Plus Pack. These include all the characters you mention. The PostScript
character set can be found in any PostScript book if you're interested. If
you do not have a PostScript printer, the Plus Pack fonts all have complete
Soft-Logik character sets.
Font Packs 1: I'm not sure what characters each individual font has. The
majority have complete character sets I know, but I haven't tested all of
them.
I assume you have a PS printer because you say you're not getting all the
CS Times characters printing out. Well, that's because those screen fonts
are made for CS Times, which does not actually print on a PS printer. CS
Times has all those characters, but Times in your printer doesn't.
Therefore, they won't print. Nothing we can do about that. Sorry.

The non-printing characters were actually discovered using the SL fonts and
a matrix printer, but just now, I don't recall which fonts. I understand,
that you concentrate on the CG fonts, but then I wonder why the Garamond
Antiqua also is far from complete.
Pagestream is a fine program, but if SL want to penetrate the European
market, too, the presence of national characters is an absolute necessity
for a serious DTP program.

Garamond Antiqua is only incomplete to PostScript. This is because
Compugraphic font technology (at least current CG technology), cannot print
to PostScript. It is incompatible. 100% incompatible. There is no way to
print CG fonts to PS printers. What we do is create a Type 3 style font (a
PostScript font) using AGFA's CG font (with a font converter) to create a
PostScript downloadable. And then we tell PgS to download the PS font every
time you try to print the CG font. Only thing is, most Type 1 to CG font
converters suck. I just bought AllType for the PC. It produces crap. I
talked to people that do high-end PC font conversion for CG fonts and they
agree, that these programs suck. They take each font and fix its errors
manually. Sorry, but we haven't done this for Garamond. We'll try to
improve it in the future.
PageStream is sold in Europe by Update Editions in France. They sell their
own fonts aimed at the European market. They also sell our 600 Type 1 fonts
which ALL have full character sets. We have the best foreign character
support of any Amiga program, and we dominate the European market. I
realize that some of the SL format fonts which come with PageStream are
inadequate for European languages, but these are PD fonts which we include
with the permission of their authors. We did not create them. The fonts you
pay for in PageStream are the 10 Compugraphic fonts.
