1000 Upgrade?

To all,
I am considering upgrading my 1000. It already has a Rejuvenator. What I
would like to do is put in an accelerator and a video enhancer and buy a
multiscan monitor.
Questions: Are my wasting my time and money. Am I better off with a
3000? Are there compatibility problems with a Mega Midget racer 68030 and
my older games. Am I safer with an Adspeed? I assume it works okay with
Word Perfect and Pro Page. Is Flicker Free Video or Ficker Fixer the better
bet? Will either one, with a multiscan monitor, equal the sharp display of
a 3000, using let's say WordPerfect or Wings.

For what it's worth…my opinion is you're better off in the long
run with either a 2500 or a 3000.

Mega-Midget works great in a Rejuvenated 1000, although you'll have to send
your machine to CSA for a custom installation. Compatibility isn't really a
problem since you can switch back to the 68000.
I used an AdSpeed in a Rejuvenated 1000 for about 5 months–you only get
about 80% speedup, but it's a marked improvement.
With the flickerFixer, your 1000 will equal the 3000's output.
You wouldn't be wasting your money to buy all these things–they'll make
your system much nicer. HOWEVER, if you've got the extra $$$ to go ahead
and move up to a 3000, you'll have fewer headaches and more expandability.
I used a souped-up 1000 (AdSpeed, Rejuvenator, a 2-slot Zorro II chassis,
Zorro II hardcard and RamCard, flickerFixer) for a long time, but I
eventually needed another slot, so I moved to a 2000. (And then to a 3000T,
but that's another story…)
Anyway, if you need to go step-by-step, the expansion devices you mentioned
will work fine. But if you can get the cash, you'll be better off in the
long run selling the 1000 (or keeping it as a backup) and getting a 3000.
If you already have a hard drive and some expansion memory, you might go
for the expansion. If you don't, the 3000 is a better bet.

Thanks for such a thoughtful reply, but I'm still not sure what to do.
What were the headaches that you mentioned? Do the add-ons overcook the
1000? Would some kind of power boost prevent that?
Right now I do have a hard drive and six megs in my 1000. I'm a writer.
I use Wordperfect about eight hours a day, so I would love to have a better
display. I use ProPage a few days each month, and the increased speed would
be terrific. I just don't forsee the need for an extra slot. Am I missing
something?

I had to add my 2 cents in here, my 1000 is running 2.04, both ECS chips,
also with the AdSpeed. I plan to change over to the Mega Miget Racer and a
Flickerfixer. I wouldn't upgrade machines except maybe to the A3000T. The
system I have works fine.

Thanks, I'm leaning toward upgrading. I just wish my 1000 was at least 98
percent stable.

The headaches were primarily finding compatible hardware and very
occasional random crashes. Now, I have the same thing happen to my 2000
with an 030 card in it… It just seems that a system with an accelerator
is never quite as stable as a real 3000. I had a rock-solid A1000 too–it
didn't crash like a number of expanded machines do. If your 1000 is stable
now, it should be the same with the Rejuvenator.
In your case, though, it seems an accelerator, Rejuvenator, flickerFixer,
and VGA monitorwould probably be fine.
What RAM and hard disk interfaces do you have?

That was my problem–random crashes–even with the Rejuvenator, although
they were much, much more frequent before it was installed. Now it mostly
crashes when I turn on my modem or when I use whap to access Compuserve
while Wordperfect is running in the background. Wordperfect used to crash
all the time. It has happened only a few times since I installed the
Rejuvenator, but frankly that's my biggest concern, putting a lot of money
into a machine whose stability is still something of a question mark. If I
had tons of dough, I'd buy the 3000 in a second, but the ultimate cost even
with the rebate is around $3,000. That's a lot for me, and the machine does
seem much more stable.
I'm using the XETEC SCSI Adaptor with four Simms Modules inside. XETEC
costumer service has been very sympathetic to my crashing problem. They
recently sent me their latest rom chip and have also replaced the ram board
inside.
The scary thing is that I don't think anybody really knows why these
things crash. I've talked to all the manufactuers, done all the noise
reduction modifications, and while it doesn't crash nearly as often, it
still does, so something is bugging the darn machine.

Safe harbor (1-800-544-6599) quotes the A3000-25/50 (Part Number
CBMA5340009) at $2675, before the $500 rebate, but without a monitor.

I sucked it in (deeply) and bought one today. The cost with a Sony monitor
and four added megsof ram was $2,970. I guess it was a g good deal but I'm
feeling mighty thin. Jeff
You do know that the Rejuvenator reduces noise on the bus. It's got better
PAL chips. It does make a more stable machine.
