I agree, $4k is a bit steep, but I dont think Ricoh is to worried. When I
was at fall Comdex, I saw a lot of them in an OEM version. The most
interesting thing was what is called Floptical (flop tickle) drives that
store 20-40MB(I think, maybe more) on a 3.5" disk using a floptical drive
which can read current 1.44mb and 720mb (730?) formats also. there are
several companies supporting this "standard". 3M and Iomega (bernoulli box
people) are to the only ones that I remember. the drive are only available
as OEM as of fall comdex '91. They say that it would be a "low cost"
solution.
Tell me about the Panisonic drive you mentioned and the syquest. How are
they different from/similar to the Ricoh or floptical drives ?

Are you serious ??? $4k for 300 meg of optical drive ??? That same $4k will
buy nearly 3 gig of hard drive. (or maybe more when Toshiba finally comes
out with their bigger drives.)
That's 300Mb per side, for a total of 600Mb. Then each cartridge (or
whatever they're called) is $100-$200. I think it's a good solution for
broadcast animators but way out of my price range. I had a chance to buy a
RICOH MO drive for $800, brand new bankrupt stock. Unfortunately, I didn't
have the spare cash, but now I regret it.
You can probably expect prices to come down as new technologies are
introduced….

Did some quick figures in the ole' bean and came up with 5 g's for 3 gig of
storage…still a grand short of the 3 gigs for some hard drives. However
for another grand you will get another 3 gigs……
Martin, How about a SCSI rewritable optical Panasonic LF-7010 940 meg for
$2658.00?
That's interesting, I certainly like the sound of that. Also, it's getting
closer to my budget of -$500 <g>
Greg, Your right about the Floptical drive. It DOES read current 1.4 and
700k 3.5" diskettes as well as 20mb _floptical_ disks. I just received
some info for an internal floptical drive that's around $500-600. They say
it's 3 times faster than a conventional floppy!
The drive I was referring to was the 3.5"MO that holds 128mb that retails
for around $1,700 from Pinnacle Micro and Micronet. I still like that idea
better.
Regarding the Panasonic and Ricoh drives, you need to ask James Hyde. He's
the one using the Panasonic.

I'm not actually running a Panasonic yet, I'm just considering it. I
haven't found a good review of the rewriteable opticals yet. Price/storage
is the driving factor for selecting the Panasonic.

After looking at all the MO drives around, I have choosen the Panasonic. I
haven't actually bought one yet but it looks like price performance ratio
is there. I'll wait anonther month or two before I actually purchase
anything though.
