#FRED bug!

I really don't mean to be an ungrateful wretch, especially with the really
first class job you all have done on the ADPRO 2 update that I received
yesterday, but I am about to pull every hair out of my head in frustration
trying to make FRED work.
My problem is identical to Chris Camilleri 76317,1771 who has posted a note
of a similiar problem here. I know I am following the manual to the
letter!
To redescribe the problem: After creating the two sequences and setting up
the compositor to create result.seq, the program works for a while, showing
its cute little thermometer, and then finishes. Yet, when I try to open up
result.seq, there are no frames. A look at my directories through the cli
shows that result.seq is present but "empty".
There is, however, a huge file labeled XXX which has been newly created,
but incomprehensible, sitting in my "adpro:" directory (which is my work:
directory on my machine). I even tried to rename the file "XXX" as
"result.seq" to see if I could load it into FRED…..no such luck.
FRED seems like that it will be a FANTASTIC utility, if only it would work.
My machine is nothing unsual: Amiga 3000, 10 megs of RAM, (8 FAST, 2 CHIP),
using the final update of the 2.0 operating system. There are no special
cards installed. There have been no problems running any other software.
My problem sounds identical to the Chris' complaint. What is happening
here?

I am having the same problem, as well. My configuration is an Amiga
2000, GVP 28mhz '030 board (w/ 50 mhz '882), 1 meg chip, 8 megs 32-bit
fast, one IDE drive, one SCSI drive, running 2.04…
I loaded up 'XXX' in ADPro, and it is in fact a 24 bit image that FRED
has produced.

I think I may have a solution to get FRED working.
I had the same problem until I played around a bit. Try this:
1) In the compositer requestor enter a name like "RESULT" in the Base
Image Name box.
2) Select Extra Options and change the Save Options from "XXX" RAW to
just RAW.
This will save a bunch (total number of frames) of pics called
RESULT.00000, RESULT.00001,… These are the frames that will be loaded
by the RESULT.SEQ.
What I think is happening is that every image that is created is being
saved to the XXX file, overwriting the previous file saved there. So only
the last image is actually saved.
Let me know if this helps any.

FRED is in its infancy. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the
oversight in the tutorial. You'll be seeing some absolutely amazing things
for FRED in the future from ASDG and other companys. Even at this stage,
it's expanding the capabilities of many of our customers.

Could you give us some ideas and uses for fred? I understand everything in
the docs but I'm not sure what some of the applications could be.
What kind of stuff did you have in mind during it's developement?

FRED is a:
1) Powerful batch processor
2) Animation previewer
3) Simple non-linear editor
4) “optical printer''
5) Non-Real Time Digital Effects Generator
What was in our mind during development was to make many capabilities of
ADPro easier to access. Capabilities which were always there, and capabilities
which are quite unique.
Additional, more powerful, AnimOps are being created…and any programmer
can create their own.

I went back thru the docs and focused on the 'call little arexx scripts'.
Now I see the big picture. I don't have to keep writing big custom Arexx
scripts for every little combination of processes I do.
I really like this stuff! 🙂

Thanks for the 2.1.3 upgrade, I think the driver for my JX100 even works
correctly! What software do I need on tje Mac to decompress the splitz.sit
file for splitz&joinz???

To unstuff Splitz and Joinz, you'll have to use Stuffit (I believe that the
archive is compatible with 1.5.1).
Note: if you are going to bring the file over to the Mac via MS-Dos
disk, you'll need to follow this routine…
a. Write file out using Cross-Dos or work-alike.
b. Use Apple File Exchange to copy file to Mac hard drive or floppy
disk.
c. Use ResEdit or similiar (I used the editor from SUM II) to change the
application type in the resource fork to "SIT!" (no quotes).
d. Unstuff with Unstuffit or Stuffit.
Would have been easier to figure out with docs….:)

I always thought that it was something that came with the System disks, but
I've seen versions of it here on Compuserve.
However, you can use something else instead, since ResEdit is not
supposed to be that friendly. Pretty much, any kind of utility that will
change the called application in the resource fork (I think I have my Mac
lingo right). You might try something that allows you to change icons, for
example. I'm sure that ASDG can recommend something…

Once splitz and joinz are on your mac, however, joinz handles all the
resedit type issues for you.

The best place to look for ResEdit is over in The Mac Developers Forum, GO
MACDEV If it's not there leave another message, and I'll EMail it to you.
It's copyrighted, but freely distributable, so it _should_ be over there
somewhere.

Have you tried the ASDG Mac Splitz and Joinz? I tried it today, and it did
not work! When splitting a file, I got a system error….so much for that
piece of software…

Please don't recommend ResEdit. It's a developer tool, not a user tool.
For the job of fixing creator and type fields ("Mac-ifying" files moved to
the Mac) there are several other PD tools that don't give you the option of
frying your System file or hard disk. One is called FixCreator Pro. I know
I've downloaded several others from the Mac libraries here on CIS.

How does one go about getting the ADPro update? I thought that it was
automatically sent to registered users. I'm a registered owner of ADPro 2
but my mailbox has been empty.
