I LOVE AGA!! Just got my Amiga 1200 today and I love the new graphics
modes….But…there's always a but…I have a few comments, complaints, etc
and since you work for Commodore, you might be able to help me out.
First…Where the heck is my AmigaDos 3.0 manual. I didn't get one and I
heard Commodore ain't shipping them with the Amiga 1200s. True?
Second…When I change screenmodes in Prefs the machine ALWAYS locks up. I
must save the new screenmode so that when the macine reboots after locking up,
I get the new screen mode I want. 'Undocumented Feature'???
Third..Can't Parnet to work…maybe the Parbench utility you've mentioned
here (It's in Amiga user..I know.) will shed some light on the subject.
Any help/info will be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work. At
least someone at Commodore is doing something right.
I don't work for C=, but I've had a 1200 for awhile.
Nope ADOS 3.0 manual, I don't know why either, though it's close enough to
2.1 to use that.
Your screenmode change probably is you have some background utility
running that keeps it's screen on the workbench, this normally isn't a
problem, since screenmode prefs asks you to close any open windows, but if
whatever that has something open, is flaky, then you get crashes.
I had problems with parnet at first too, but all the problems went away
when I increased the stack to 40K for anything that would use the NET
drive (SID2, Shells…)

I can't get PARNET to work at all. I'm doing everything from the Shell.
Npnet-server runs fine. Then I mount net:. But when I cd net:dh0 it freezes
up and I have to reboot. I know the cable is fine, I used it to network two
other machines together. Hmmmmm…
Any hardware types out there: is it possible that a cable that works
between machines A and B would fail between machines C and D?
Possibly due to more environmental noise, less available power
supply on one of the machines, something else? I have seen quite
a few reports by A1200 owners that previously working parnet
setups "just stopped working" when ported to a 1200. This is
not the same kind of thing as "I can't get it to work" – these
people have already gotten it to work once, so they probably have
the software set up right.
There is no technical reason why the software wouldn't work, and it
does work on some A1200's. It's got to be a hardware issue.

You might try checking the cable again, the lockup is usually caused by a
cable problem.
Otherwise, I don't know what the problem could be.

You mentioned a Parnet file in AmigaUser Comms called Parbench. I've been
there many times over the past few days and haven't seen it there. How long ago
was it uploaded?
I don't really know, I got it off another net, but I did see it here…

Most weird. I have a 1200 and a 2000 parnetted together, and the whole shebang
ran up mostly first time. I have a boot disk that loads parnet and then
transfers to the 2000 and boots off the harddisk there. I fiddled about a
little to get the right combination of commands on the boot disk, etc, but
didn't have to mess with stacks or anything.

If you are changing to a screen mode whose sync rate is not supported by your
monitor, weird things can happen. I also recall that one of the mode promotion
hacks available may be incompatible with the ScreenMode prefs editor.
Changing to supported screen modes and I don't have any of the promotion
hacks you speak of. Thanks.
