#Prompts are step behind

A problem has recently surfaced that is most baffling, if not really
really an impossible situation. While 2.01 was still on the machine, my prompts
started lagging one step behind. For instance, I would choose CAMERA -> PLACE
and I would pick a place. At this point, there would be no prompt for the
target, although it would accept the next point as the target. After picking
this point, the normal CREATE dialog box would come up, I would pick O.K., and
now the PICK TARGET prompt would appear. Everything seems to function O.K.;
it's just that the prompts are one step behind.
Now it gets really weird. I just installed the 2.01a update, (not as a
new installation … just the executable, etc.), figuring this would solve the
problem, but it is still there, regardless whether it is a completely new model
or not. I can go ahead and re-install the whole thing, but should this
hopefully solve the problem? I am using an Hitachi 1212D digitizer set up as a
mouse, and SoftEngine 2.1 as a video driver. Any ideas?

BTW, this happens on all the prompts, (Create, Lights, etc.). They all
lag one step behind, although otherwise, the functionality of the program does
not seem to be affected.

Does this problem occur with a microsoft compatible mouse, rather than a
digitizer working as a mouse.

Yes, it also happens with a mouse. I have now narrowed it down to the
video driver, which I will try re-installing, as it wasn't always this way.
I've found RCPVESA works O.K.

Very bizarre problem your system is exhibiting there. I've never heard of
anything like it, and I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem. A virus maybe?
Either that or something wacky happening with your memory manager or cpu. Try
re-installing the entire system and scanning your computer for virus'. And
then use the VGA display and see what happens.

Well, I think I've narrowed the lagging prompt problem down. 'Changed
to the RVPVESA driver, and everything's fine. I guess I'll try reinstalling
SoftEngine and see what happens. I did delete 3DADI.CFG and VIBRANT.CFG and
configure again, but the problem was still there until I went to RCPVESA. It
isn't the digitizer/SoftEngine combo, because the same thing happens with a
plain mouse. If re-installing SoftEngine doesn't work, I'll drop a line to Jack
Bayt and see if he has any ideas. Anyway, it's a relief to know it isn't the
program. I'll let you know what happens.

Glad to hear that you've figured it out. Things like that are almost always a
combination of the hardware and drivers. The PC market is so incredibly
complicated, and then ADI had to come along and make it even MORE complicated.

The problem is Vibrant's driver. I experienced it last fall with version 2.1.0
and reported it to their telephone tech rep. He sent me version 2.1.3 a week
or so later with the fix. I recently received 2.1.5 which fixes the
missing-icon-colors problem, and the prompt is still OK.
