Text reader blues …

I would like to find a text reader that has the following features:
1) Will handle multiple files. I don't want to write an Arexx script to call
the thing more than once. I don't like the window opening and closing
and I wan't to switch quickly back and forth.
2) Will expand wildcards on the command line.
3) Powerpacker compatibility would be nice.
4) Large files without loading the whole thing in memory. Fast (of course).
I have downloaded 2 or 3 of these things, but either they don't handle more
than one file or they will but "proudly" announce that they deliberately didn't
expand wildcards because they think its "wrong" and that shell should handle
it. Programmers. *Sheesh*.
I'm getting tired of looking, can someone point me the right way?

Don't know if you have looked at this one or that it meets all your
needs.
Take a look at View80. It will load ten files into its buffers. I'm not
sure what you mean by expanding wildcards on the command line, but I have
an idea of what you mean. Yup, just tried this view80 sys:textfiles/#?.txt
and it loaded up all ten buffers and announced it could not load anymore
files. Yes, it handles powerpacker files. Not sure about the memory thing
though, give it a try, I think you'll like it.

The best thing about View80 is that it is the smoothest scrolling test
reader ON THE PLANET!! It scrolls smoothly enough you can very comfortably
scroll down while reading without interupting you "flow". I highly
recommend it.

I agree. I use View80 almost exclusively… the one thing I don't like is
that it opens only in full screen… do you know if that is adjustable? I
run it from a hotkeyed command line… maybe a VIEW80 con=xxxxx?

There are a couple of things I don't like about view 80 also. You can't
launch an editor from it and it takes to many keyboard strokes/mouse
clicks to quit. I like just hitting "q" to quit my text readers. But the
smooth scrolling more than makes up for these defiencies IMHO.
Smooth scrolling doesn't work for me with my Ultra 1600 Princeton Graphics
multi-sync. Apparently it has nothing to do with the Amiga, just the long
persistence phosphors of the monitor. <sigh> Other than that it seems like
a nice enough monitor. Who'd a thought I'd be complaining that my
phosphors are too long in their persistence. <grin>

Too bad about the monitor. I tried to by one of those from Damark, but
they were out of stock.
Give view80 a try anyway. It has a variable speed scrolling feature. If
you scroll slow enough, it might mitigate the effects of the long
persistence phosphors.

I've been using View80 since I discovered it! It is a very nice text viewer and
I won't let the ghosting effect of the long persistence phosphors stop me.
Course I could use the 1080 monitor once in a while.

Michael… re: an editor with View80… yeah, but I just COPY RANGE TO
CLIPBOARD and then paste to my editor… but it would be nice to go in to
EDIT mode… then again, that would make View80 a bit more than a file
reader!

I don't mean that view80 should have an editor. I mean that a keystroke
should be able to lauch the editor indicated by the EDITOR enviroment
variable.

In View80, just hit the escape key to quit. One key!
What version of view80 do you have? I have 2.0, but to quit I have to hit
escape then return or Amiga-Q and return.
I have 2.0 and all I have to do is hit escape.

Go into Preferences menu in View80 and turn off "Ask Confirmations", then
select save configuration at bottom of menu.

I, too, have 2.00. The secret to is turn off the "Ask Confirmations" option
under the Preferences menu, then do a "Save Configuration" under that same
menu. View80 will no longer put up that requester.
