I finally received and had time to check out the Nerd column on the Feb
Nautilus disk. To be perfectly clear about where I am comming from (unlike the
nerd, who waffled at the end) I am one of 2 or 3 people on the planet who never
understood why anyone voted for Reagan.
I pretty much agree with your comments on this column. If I want political
commentary, there is no end of newspapers or magazines available to me. I
suscribed to Nautilus to read, see, and feel the new age of multimedia on PC's.
I too am offended and hope this is the only occurance of this kind on Nautilus.
If not, I'll probably seek elsewhere for what I expected of Nautilus.

For the record, I fully understood why people voted for Reagan but I never
did. However, if the thing had been slavish praise of Clinton or a trashing
using the vocabulary of the far left of Bush or Reagan I would have reacted the
same. There's a place for this. Many places. I even subscribe to a bunch of
publications and watch McLaughlin Group every week. NAUTILUS, however, isn't
the place for it even if there were an equal time provision, which there isn't.
On a purely secondary level, and as somebody who's done a lot of political
commentary over the years and whose graduate degrees are in the History of
Ideas (isms, ologies, that sort of thing) I find anonymous polemic to be the
most offensive thing of all, and those who use it are by definition gutless
ignoramus trash. And I'm paying for this???

I wasn't as offended by the Nerd column as you–though I'm
emphatically _not_ interested in seeing more Nautilus political
columns. What got to me was the tired, tired, old position that the
media was favoring one candidate over another. (I seem to remember a
"60 Minutes" program with Hilary and Bill explaining something or
other . . . .)
To segue a little, did you take a look at the fine .avi clips of
the Oakland hills fire? The audio is the best part, but some of the
movies do a good job of documenting that scary situation.
