#Gateway Probs??
3 messages in this thread
Hello, folks!
A friend is considering purchasing a Gateway DX2/66 w/local bus to be used as a
3DS workstation. Can anyone report on any problems concerning:
1) Memory management up to 64MB.
2) Basic compatibility.
3) PharLap compatibility.
4) ADI/VESA problems with the ATI ultra card it comes with.
5) Anything 3DS-related!
Thanks, everyone.

You might want to check out the msg I posted here re the ATI drivers. As far
as the ATI drivers for 3DS are concerned, I've never encountered a problem.
The ATI VLB cards we have are not connected to Gateway systems. Gateway uses a
Micronics motherboard in their system. My dealer told me he has heard of
problems using a Micronics motherboard with an ATI VLB card, the problem he
heard of does not occur with the 1MB boards, only boards with 2 MB of VRAM
(which have the 24bit RAMDAC). As far as other problems, you might browse the
msgs in the ATI section in the GRAPHVEN forum. Most of the msgs are from
Gateway customers. If you get InfoWorld, you might check out a recent front
page article regarding poor support at Gateway. Having owned a Gateway system
for about 2 years, I can tell you that they have probably gone from excellent
to the absolute worst customer service I have ever seen for anything, not just
computers. If you have a problem, you will never get past an operator. Tech
lines will always be busy, your call will never go through, your call will
never be returned. No waiting to talk to a salesperson though. If you decide
to go with Gateway, bear in mind they will take about $500 off if you don't get
their lousy display (a 15" MAG). Regardless what they claim about reviews, you
can do better, and I might add the 15" MAG is known for poor color matching
(I've got one). They will also take about another $200 off if you don't get
the 1MB ATI UltraPro VLB, but that will leave you without a display card. They
don't offer any other local bus card.
Good luck,
DanP
Thanks for the info, Dan.
