#Play audio thru sndcard
10 messages in this thread
Does anyone know how I can make audio cd's play thru my sound card. I D/L a
cd player which plays cd's, but I have to hook up headphones to cd-rom to
listen.
Audio on cd-rom's plays thru sound card just fine, but I can't seem to make
audio
cd's do it. Thanks for all help.
If the drive is internal, there sould be a sound cable that is connected
between the CD drive and the sound card (not the flat ribbon controller cable).
This cable supplies the CD audio output to the sound card.
If the drive is external, the cables connecting the drive to the card should
supply the cd audio output to the card.
What type of drive/sound card do you have? Internal or external?
Kevin, It's an internal drive, but it does have 2 RCA outputs on back of
adapter board. It's been suggested that I wire the output of the cd-rom to the
input of the soundcard. I guess that might work, but I'd prefer to send the
audio over the computer's internal bus, just like when it plays audio off a
cd-rom. I don't see why I can't do that, but I sure haven't out how yet. I'd
appreciate any suggestions.
You souldn't have to "wire" anything. There sould be a standard cable assembly
that connects to the audio out of the CD drive to a CD audion In on the card.
What kind of Drive and Audio card do you have?
There is no way to send the CD audion out over the computer bus…nor would you
really want to. The CD player simply controls the the CD drive. When an audio
CD is played from the player, the audio is either sent to the headphone jack
(if headphones are plugged in) or to the audio out connector on the CD drive.
the reason you can't hear anything on the speakers is because there is nothing
connecting the audio out of the CD player to the CD audio in of the sound
board (and thus the sound boards audio out)
You can not use the computer's internal bus to send audio, so a cable must be
made or purchased. If you tell us the type of drive and soundcard someone is
likely to come up with a source for a ready made cable.
Mike…I just bought a ProAudio Spectrum and the way they say to do it is to
plug the AUDIO OUT on the CD drive to the LINE IN on the sound card. If your
setup is similar, it should work for you. My understanding is that Audio CD's
sound cannot be read from the interface bus, only from the headphone jack. Hope
this helps.

Larry, It does help–It just doesn't give me the answer I wanted. Maybe we can
get some programmers interested in a software solution to this problems.
Thanks,
MIKE
The data stream for audio CDs is routed to the internal D/A convertor. The
data stream is not usually availble via the data bus. Most drives mute the
data circuits in the drive during audio tracks. Audio produced by the sound
card is different. This is why you must make a analog audio connection from
the drive analog audio circuits line output to the line input on the sound card
or CD audio input pins on the sound card.
Mike, I had always difficulties understandig what Bill Thomas explains in his
answer to your message. In my laymans words I think it is this (Bill, please
correct me, if not):
Although the audio data on an audio CD is stored in digital format, you will
never get digital data from an audio CD out of a CD-ROM drive. The data goes
through a drive internal D/A and is available *only* in analog format. That
means either you pick it up from the RCA jacks and into the soundboards line in
jack, or (if present) you use analog out pins somewhere on an *internal* drive
(inside the computer) to connect those to the *internal* Audio-CD-in pins
(inside the computer) (if present) on the sound card. If you should finally
give us your drive and card type, someone will probably know where to get the
connecting cable wich, again, will run *inside* your computer. There is no
software solution to this, as digital audio CD data never gets out of the
drive. Thomas
