I have an A4000/040 (I believe the buster chip is pre version 11 since I
bought in in Jan of 93) and I am considering adding a SCSI card soon. I
am, however, a little confused with this buster chip problem. I was
checking out the GVP 4008 due to its competitive price. If I indeed do
have a prior version 11 buster chip, will I need to do anything to my
system to use the 4008?
Also, I've seen some talk in here about a new 4098 (I believe). What is
the difference between this and the 4008, when is it due to be released
and what is the expected MSRP? And, of course, would the situation with
my buster chip be the same?
I have also been looking at the DKB 4091, how does this compare to what
GVP's SCSI controllers have to offer?

Mr. Christie,
The A4008 card does not require the Buster rev.11 chip is almost all cases.
It is a Zorro II card, and is not really affected by the DMA troubles in the
Buster chip. We always do advise, however, that you do upgrade the Buster chip
because it will solve problems down the road.
In regard to the A4098 SCSI controller, well… We can't discuss unreleased
products (company policy, sorry).

Silly policy! 🙂 Can you at least tell me what it is? I mean, is it
a new SCSI controller, or a accelerator, etc? After all, if it
sounds interesting I may refrain from buying anything else in
anticipation of its release.
Regarding the A4098 controller and RAM card…
In a recent COnference here on CIS, I noted that we would *not* be
bringing the A4098 to market at this time. Rather than get into all
the 'gory' details, suffice it to say that problems that continue to
plague the o4o-equipped A4000 from Commodore cause serious
degradation in performance when attempting to DMA RAM on a Zorro-III
card. This disappointing news has caused us to halt the projected
delivery of the A4098 product. We will still bring to market the
SCSI-II FAST card and RAM extension card for our G-Force o4o/40MHz, as
they are unaffected by the Zorro-III DMA problems. My Technical
Staff has been given guidance to not discuss the issue as yet. I
just wanted to clear the air so they wouldn't have to keep dodging.
If you have specific questions on this, please address them to me
directly, as Tech Support will not be commenting on un-released
products. Perhaps a silly policy, but one that has served us well
these past 6 years.

realize certain politics must be followed to run a company effectively.
