To all and sundry:
I have been offered a Mountain 250MB tape backup for $250. I've seen it and it
works. The seller tells me this is the bargain of the century. Is it?

Not hardly. I just bought a Conner 250mb DC2120 tape drive for $170. Only
reason you might pay that much for a 250meg drive is if it is a SCSI unit. If
it hooks into your floppy controller it is a very bad deal.

List price on an FS8000 is $649, but list on a TD-250 is $247. At the high
end, the FS7250 external lists at $1395 or $1695 w/scsi adapter. The Colorado
Jumbo 250 internal lists at $199.

if that's US$250 it's not a good deal, they are about US$170 now and I got a
Colorado refurb for US$119 a couple of days ago.

Where did you get the refubished unit? Seems I too have to get a Colorado
tape 250. After the demo of the PAR that AlanI and I did at last weeks users
group I already recieved my first anim to tape job.

What would be a good price to charge for this type of service? I
know it should be cheaper than frame by frame and that varies widely so…
any thoughts…?

$250 American? I know you're down under. As Glenn Melenhorst's talking Manna
banana would say, "YAY!"
It sounds like a QIC-80 type backup, which is good. That's what most people I
know are using. You can put 120MB of real data, and they'll say 250MB
compressed (they assume about a 2:1 compression).
For your reference, the price for a new QIC-80 from Colorado Memory Systems,
(a major brand) is about $160 american, which includes one DC2120 tape.
If the drive is different from a QIC80, disregard – I don't know what you've
got.
