Hiya out there! What I'm looking for is a CD Writer, not a WORM Drive, but the drive that writes regular CD-ROMS. I need to know if anyoone knows if they can hook up to an Amiga or PC Clone. If you can drop a price to me, that'd be great too. Also, any info on the interface required (ie SCSI, SCSI-II, IDE ect.). Thanx Pete.

"regular CD-ROMS" are not writeable. That's why they're called ROMs.

I know that's why, but they are written somehow. Apparently they are avaiable for about $7000 or $8000 for the PC. I want to know if I can hook one of these suckers up to my Amiga. Thanx for the answer tho, at least I know someone's out there! Pete.

Ah, one of those. The best price I've heard of for them (no, I do NOT know who makes them) is around $25,000. Most CD's are in fact 'stamped' then vapor deposited with aluminum. I don't know what technology these drives use.

The people you want to talk to are Meridian Data systems in Washington DC metro area. they are the Experts! We are pursuing CD-ROM at work and have been talking to them about getting a setup to press our own roms. It is possible, I've seen the machine. It is about 2 feet square and will fit easily on a desktop. There is a lot to doing it though. You need a way to produce the 600 Mb worth of data that will go onto the rom. Meridian uses a bank of hard drives to do it. I'll get my info from work and let you know more ASAP. – via Whap!

Bradly, You might also want to contact "Nimbus Records", I think in Charlottesville (sp) VA. I met one of their VPs on an intercontinental trip a while back, and they're into BOTH audio and data CDs.

Here's a related message from a while back on usenet: "This is called CD-WO (Write Once). We use a system by Yamaha called the PDS (Programmable Disc System). It interfaces with a PC or other host for control signals and as a "data source". We actually use them here for making CD-I discs, although I know that they are also being used to make CD-DA and CD-ROM discs." "They can be purchased in the US through OptImage Services (515-225-7000 or 800-CDI-5484). In Europe, you can probably get them through your local Yamaha distributor."
