Hi All, Can anyone tell me why the following is happening? 1. I have rendered sections of animations separately in 3ds and then joined them in ani pro. The problem is that when I play the joined FLC, a very brief shift in palette occurs before the first frame of the second section. – Both sections were rendered with the same meshes and the same materials. 2. Also, I can't play rendered FLC's in 3DS. I have to exit and go into ani pro to see the results of the rendering. I'll appreciate all suggestions. Thanks. –Rebbie

Can anyone tell me why the following is happening? 1. I have rendered sections of animations separately in 3ds and then joined them in ani pro. The problem is that when I play the joined FLC, a very brief shift in palette occurs before the first frame of the second section. – Both sections were rendered with the same meshes and the same materials. If the palettes change throughout the combined (joined) flicks, you'll get the scatter. One way to curb this is to do some palette fitting. You can refer to what this is all about in the ANI telecourse files in ACAD forum section 7. The basic gist of palette fitting is this; Take a census of the most popular colors used in each individual FLC, and free up a portion of each flic's palette to accomodate each other. ANI has 256 colors, so 126 colors per flic would be a straightforward 50/50 approach for two flics. 50/50 isn't always the best ratio… it depends on how many colors each flic uses. Using the SQUEEZE and UNUSED COLORS options in PALETTE panel, you can find out how many colors the flic needs and uses, and how much each can sacrifice for a reasonable composite. Palette control in 3DS is very powerful for continuous renderings, but the palettes of seperate renderings are typically calculated on a per-rendering basis. There are ways to use custom palettes in 3DS, once you've taken the palette file from one animation in ANI (it can create palette files) and used it for future renderings. This has been my experience. You might also pass this question on to MARK McGRAW (faculty for ANI1 telecourse. I think Palette fitting was discussed in ANI1-B or ANI1-C. Good luck. -dave

Courses are being taught about Animator Pro and 3D Studio for free this semester. Registration deadline ended in December and the courses are 50% completion, but the files are still there for the courses. Use keywords TELECOURSE and NAAUGINS to find them. -dave

Dave, I'm going to have to reread your message when I can fully focus. I've been away from the computer for a few days. I appreciate your input and I may have another question or two once I try what you are recommending. Thanks again, Rebbie

Hi Rebbie, I hope I can help you. If you rendered your 2 animation using 3DS, usally, it will not using the same color palette .. even though you are using the same material. The answer of this problem lies in Ani Pro. If you want to make the same color palette to your joined animation, just go to the Color Panel (by right clicking color palette on Home Panel), and search in the pulldown menu for ONE PALETTE (I forgot which one). Anim Pro will make the best fit for two animation palette. (The best fit for Anim Pro doesn't mean the best for us!) Hope this will help you. bye, Izak.

Thanks. I will try this and let you know how it goes. Rebbie

Rebbie, The best solution to the pallete changes between renderings is to ALWAYS use a custom pallette. If you have already rendered a section and the pallette is OK then use that .flc as the custom pallette file. If you later try to fix it in Ani Pro you won't get pallette shift but you WILL get a color shift. About the playing of .flc's in 3DS…are you using rel 2 or 3. Tell us what happens when you VIEW FLIC. Ralph

Thanks. I will try this. I'm using v.2 and when I attempt to view a flic the screen flashes and returns to the same screen I was in… but not always. (Doesn't that drive you crazy?) I'm wondering if it's the size of the flic that prohibits it from running. I'd appreciate any advice to get it working. It's annoying to have to leave the program everytime I want to view a flic. Thanks again, Rebbie
