Can anybody help me with a dead mouse problem on an Amiga 2000?. The mouse buttons work fine but the pointer will not move at all. The mouse works fine on another machine so that would see ok. Is this a well known fault (easy to fix , cheap hopefully!)…. Many thanks Paul Lakey (UK)

Paul, It sounds like you've blown the fuse for the mouseport. It resembles a resistor without the color bands and is on the motherboard just to the left of the mouseport. To get at it, you have to pull the power supply/ drive bay. If you've got a voltmeter, check carefully between the two middle pins of the bottom row at the joystick port. There should be 5v there. (Better to do that before the hassle of tearing up your computer.) -Jim

Jim, Thanks for the help, I will check the fuse, if thats all it is I will be very happy! ;-). Do the fuses blow for any reason (fault in the mouse etc) or is it just one of those things?. Cheers Paul

Paul, Glad to help… I've seen that problem enough times. I think it's mainly due to people plugging in things like mice or joysticks with power on. BTW, what you'll need is a 4 amp 'picofuse'. If you've got a rev 4.x motherboard, look for a burned trace, they don't have fuses. -Jim

Paul, I had the same problem – it's the fuse. Don't call Commodore Tech support; they'll tell you that this is a known fault and requires a motherboard swap. (I'm not joking) If you can't fix it yourself, and if your're in London or the south east, there are a couple of companies that will do the fix for you for around 35 pounds. Otherwise, just solder a piece of fusewire across the the fuse pads. Regards, John A. On AutoPilot all the way from the U.K.

John, Thanks for your help, I should be able to sort it out myself as long as I can indentify the fuse ok. Does'nt suprise me about Commodore, I know someone who had his 3000 motherboard replaced because of a faulty clock battery, it was under an on-site plan so I guess it was'nt too bad. Paul
