#3DS3 IS SLOW!!

Mike,
This is a problem I might have expected with R1 and R2 but speed differences in
R3 seem to be mostly hardware related. When you took out double space did you
reconfigure your memory? Have you tried just cleaning out your entire
config.sys expect
John,
>>This is a problem I might have expected with R1 and R2 but speed differences

When my sytem crashed, what was I: (Host for C:, which contained my menu
software, etc.) was converted to C: (no system files, 3DS, ANI, etc.).
I did an FDISK and FORMAT, restored my Config.sys, and took out all
doublespace information, restored the rest of my software and rebooted.
Since doing this, 3DS does seem to be slower. Entering and Exiting,
getting the cursor up on the screen, refreshing the Materials Editor Screen and
loading project files all seem different.
When I installed 3DS3 onto my PC which was already Doublespaced, I was able to
enter and exit very quickly from 3DSr3 and ANI PRO, etc.
When I "RE-DID" my system, only two things come to mind that may be
different:
1. In my CMOS table I selected HD Type 43 (210 mb HD) which should be
correct (I am waiting for info from the Gateway 2000 Forum) and
2. I switched my vibrant drivers to the latest drivers from ASOFT.
Other than those two things, EVERYTHING (regarding software) should
be identical.

Michael,
You might want to consider upgrading to 6.2. Its much better and has safety
features built in so that things like what happened to your H.D. don't occur.
It also lets your format and remove dblspaced drives including your boot drive.
I think the upgrade is about $10. Well worth it.
I think that you may be on to something with regard to dblspace speeding up the
redraws etc. I've noticed a speed increase as opposed to people that don't used
dblspace, which I couldn't previously account for. As a matter of fact I wasn't
getting a noticeable increase in redraws with Liquid Speed, where a client who
also has 3DS systems was. They installed dblspace in the same time period that
we upgraded their display cards. I attributed the speed increase to the display
cards, now I think not. The redraws are now very close with or without Liquid
Speed. FWIW

John,

I have to beleive that DS did in fact speed up my system. I first noticed the
increase in speed when I reconfigured my config.sys
to use smartdrive and himem.
I then DS'd my HD and loaded 3DS3 on. Everything was moving pretty
fast. But now, after the crash, it definately take longer to load
3DS3, and the materials editor, seems to "draw" the HLS and RGB sliders
instead of them being "dumped" onto the screen as before (w/o DS).
The only other thing I can think of, is that I placed the wrong HD type in my
CMOS.
Any other help will be appreciated.

Mike,
Two things. What type of HD do you have? I might be able to look it up in my HD
book and give you HEADs SECTORS etc. which you can compare with how its setup.
The other thing is why not go out and get 6.2? I think its about $10 at
Egghead. That way you can have Doublespace, the increased speed and more space.
On another note, have you used memmaker to configure your upper memory? Did you
re-run after you took out DBLSPACE?
And lastly did you reconfigure 3DS VIBCFG for your display card? Do you have
the previous version of the Vibrant drivers? (Yes of course they're on your
original release disks.) Try using the original ones.
This is the best I can suggest. Try any of these in any order that makes sense
to you. I'd go with 6.2 myself but that's the most time consuming.

John,
I have a 200 mb Western Digital IDE. 6.2 will probably be my next purchase.
386MAX is my manager of choice. I use this. I don't use MEMAKER because I could
have sworn that it I read that isn't bug free?.
I restored my old Vibrant drivers to no avail.
If I find anything out, I will let you know.
Thanks for all the info.

Mike,
I'm not an expert here but here is some info that may help.
If you are going to use a disk doubler, I suggest Stacker 4.0 since it has
better compression ratios. Mickeysoft had to remove their compression stuff due
the the law suit from Stacker. version 6.2 does not contain compression
software.
When you compress a disk the information is now on your hard disk in much
smaller bits, therefore it takes less time to retrieve the same amount of
information than on an uncompressed drive. BUT… the decompression time slows
down the process so that it is not really any faster than an uncompressed
driver. There is a freeware product available here on cserve that will give you
some diagnostics from windows. It's called Wintune, I forget where it is
probably in the windows forum somewhere. Try the Norton stuff as well for some
disk analysis.
I only compress part of my hard drive, about 200MB out of 500mb. this gives me
additional space but keeps room for critical files on an uncompressed drive.
The xfer rates for compressed drives can be as much as 2MB/sec slower than
uncompressed drives. (On one of my machines, a Dell 466M, the xfer for the
compressed drive is 1.4Mb/sec while the uncompressed drive is 3.24Mb/sec.)
It takes me about 30 sec to start up 3DS on my 466M and its a little quicker on
my Dell 450SE ( a 50mhz system) for some reason. (you'd think the 66mhz would
always be quicker but it's not.)
That's my 2 cents worth,
Tom
Thomas,
How much is stacker?
I switched from 386MAX to SMARTDRIVE and HIMEM after noticing some speed gaines
entering and exiting 3DS and ANI PRO. I assume that because of smartdrive's
caching and my Qcache TSR, things were moving
pretty good.
In general, though, 3DS3 seems a little slower in the rendering process
than 3DS2 (although no CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT) changes have been made.
I just made a complete system backup. I am tempted to re-install DS to
see about the speed.
Thanx for your input.

Stacker is about $75 bucks but I think you can get upgrades from 6.0/6.1 for
about $50.
I agree that 3DS 3.0 is slower at rendering than 2.0 but the anti alias is much
better along with several other features. I think the ability to network render
far offsets any minor differences. I have 3 486 machines that I'm getting ready
to hook together as soon as I can figure out what the best network for 3DS is.
Tom
Thomas/Michael..
<< r3 slower than r2? >>
try rendering a scene with a full screen object with transparency
and another object behind it also full screen with transparency.
What are your times in r2 and r3?
jonas[adesk]
If your hardware is working correctly, 3DSr3 will render about 30%
faster than 3DSr2's Medium mode, and 50-150% faster than 3DSr2's High
mode. Only r2's pitiful Low AA mode (2×2 sample) would be faster than
r3.
What? My 6.2 has DoubleSpace…

I heard that MS was required to pull it from all of there DOS
versions. You obviously got one of the pre-ruling copies. I don't
expect it will be available for much longer

John,
When you start 3DS and get the Liquid Speed banner, be sure that the
version listed is 1.0.2. We had a problem with 1.0.1 that caused LS
to perform poorly in some systems. If you didn't receive our update
(free) in the mail you can download the new LS from our BBS at
512-918-3411. No Charge.
Best Regards,
Brian
Thanks Brian,
I've got the latest release of LS, per your mailing. Thanks.
