#Wireframe shadows

I would like to check and see if anyone out there has experienced an
annoying problem that has just cropped up on me en route to a
deadline. If I can fix it today I can still save a couple of stills,
but this problem will still be in most of an animation that I may not
be able to redo in time.
I have a curved surface (long arc) that represents a fascia with typ.
material and mapping to represent stone. I created a second set of
faces along the same curve but offset a couple of inches in front of
the fascia object. The second set has all edges invisible except for
the top and bottom edges. I applied a 2-sided, Phong, wireframe
(1-pixel) material to the second set. The wireframe object should
appear as a thin line on the fascia, which it had up until now. Part
of the wireframe object is casting a shadow on the fascia surface,
even though I have turned off the Cast Shadows and Receive Shadows
buttons on the object!
By moving the light source and rendering with/without shadows I have
confirmed that the second line appearing is a shadow, but I cannot
seem to get rid of it. It has created an ugly smear along the two
edges on half of the fascia surface. The only other idea I had was
to exclude the object from the spotlight, but that does not affect
shadows. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it –
I'll be on the road some today but will check in as much as
possible. In the meantime I'll go eat some more Tums for that lovely
feeling in my stomach – the one I've seen many of you describe when
some problem wrecks a lot of work!

In the 3DS.SET file check the setting for Shadow-exclusion=on. This will keep
excluded objects from casting shadows. Hope that helps.

Or you can turn off Casts Shadows in the object attributes dialog box.

I'm not sure that alone will keep excluded objects from casting shadows which
seemed to be the problem. Just thinking out loud.

It sounds as though you've covered the objects' (you've turned off the recieve
shadow option on the fascia, and the cast shadows on the wire object, right?)
shadow options, Bob. And it also sounds like you've got the lighting covered.
Maybe it's just a question of being completely thorough? Objects excluded in
shadow-casting spotlights should *not* cast shadows.
Make sure *any* shadow-casting spotlight that is influenced by the Wire object
has excluded it. Then, dedicate a new, non-shadow casting light (even an omni
to be safe, if you wish), to the wire object. Adjust until the wire object's
lighting matches the rest of the scene. There should be no shadow produced by
this object now.
I hope this is a quick-fix for you. I'm gonna go into the program right now to
do a little testing on WF materials/shadows…

Hi, Alan. So I need to exclude the wireframe object from the spotlight even
though I have turned Receive Shadows off for the object itself? I will do that
and set up an Omni light to compensate as you suggested. I still don't know
what I am doing wrong – I may go back and rebuild the wireframe object, but
that would take some time to get it repositioned correctly. Thanks for the
advice!

Whoa!
Sorry about that, Bob. In my feverish state, I completely forgot about
exclusion *not* affecting shadow casting. I entered the 3ds.set parameter so
long ago that I forgot it wasn't standard!
Modifying the fascia's attributes to *not* receive shadows should work in any
case, though.
Sounds like TedB's got the answer that affords the most versatility, as
excluding lights and their respective shadows will allow the fascia to receive
shadows from other lights…

I don't really want to turn off Receive shadows for the fascia because it is an
exterior scene and I only have one spotlight (sun) in it. I'll try Ted's idea
of excluding in the 3DS.SET file. Hopefully I will report back with a positive
result!
