I'm looking for any suggestions on creating realisic ( or even close ) water effects. My goal is to create underwater efffects of a rotor blade or somthing similar passing through it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jonathon, there's some interesting bubble ipas routines that have been released recently. Very good for underwater scenes. Check the libraries for sample flics and/or ordering details. Try your local dealer or Digimation 800-854-4496 for suitable IPAS routines.

FWIW, I've created fairly realistic underwater effects as if a propeller is passing through the water by using Yost's IPAS Spurt.axp in combination with Digimation's Bubble.axp. For general underwater atmosphere, use combinations of Yost's Water.sxp, Projector Lights with bitmap of water caustics, Fog, Blur, and Snow.axp. Make sure to provide a backlight for the bubbles for better effect. You might also put a animated map of water (or Water.sxp) on a translucent plane placed directly in front of the camera, and look through it for more turbulent atmosphere. Hope this helps. BILL

Wow! Thanks for the information. I would be interested in seeing a single frame of your animation. I do have one initail question though. What do you mean by water caustics? I don't have any experiece with IPAS. but I'll give it a shot. Thanks again.

Uh….caustics are reflective / refractive phenomena that occur when light interacts with a material with those properties, in particular water. Let's see…. have you ever noticed at a swimming pool, the shimmering light patterns on the concrete sides of the pool, or on the bottom ? Caustics are the patterns of light that appear due to light reflecting from a wind-peturbed curved specular surface OR refracting through a non-homogeneous material. Another example would be when light passes through a glass or chandelier, etc.. Besides seeing shadows and reflections possibly, you also see the light patterns produced which are caustics. They form because rays from a light source converge AND diverge when interacing with objects in a given environment. In rendering, can be considered a form of diffuse reflection, resulting in patterns of light AND darker areas. When formed on second-hit surfaces (such as the sides of the pool), are examples of specular-to-diffuse transport. Any additional light propagation from a second to third or greater hit is purely diffuse interaction. That's about all I can say on the subject. Hope it helped more than confused <g>. BILL

Thats all very nice, but pointless, becuase it doesnt help him out any. So my one little tip is try using blue marble with may the – underwater rocks/cliffs/formations. It give it a nice blue-rock effect, which gives the eye a most realistic illusion of being underwater. You could also try playing around with the fog. -Jamie Kirschenbaum(Creative Director_)

We think alike. I,m here scouting for the same kind of info. I want to learn how to make a still or flick of a boat passing over head. I have made rewal good boat models and I have a excellent five blade prop that you could use. But I don,t know how to use my ipas modules yet. email me if you want to put or resourses togeather. -Mike-

Some maps I mentioned were based on a diamond-tiling (as in Queen of diamonds). Among other things, that tiling emulates the wave pattern that follows a boat moving slowly down a channel. The tiles are bounded by the diagonal waves produced by the boat and by their reflection off the walls of the channel. I've got my daughter to thank for that information. Last week she dragged me kicking and screaming to see Shirley McLaine's new movie. I saw the pattern in one of the first scenes. Maybe something like that will work for your < boat passing over head> A diamond-tiling for water is also used for "Wolf-Pack," at least for the picture on the cover. (I think I called this software Wolfenstein when I mentioned it about a week ago, sorry). Ed K

Definitely check out Ed Kellerman's animator pro flics. He's got a lot of awesome water bump map potential stuff, and I'm sure you guys could work out something for a rotor-blade water bump map. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

If you are referring to the turbulence generated by the rotor blade, try using a fractal pattern on a cone shaped object with a transparencey falloff. Spin the object, and have it morph along the axis your prop is moving to help create the illusion of a stream of turbulent bubbles being pushed away. It might also help to add some velocity to your fractal pattern along the same axis. You can cheat the effects of cuastic refractions by applying an animated bump map to your water surface that consists or a moving gray scale pattern, and then ray trace your light through it. I generated my grayscale images by crumpling up several sheets of paper, scaning in the pattern, and then using a morph package to generate the transitions between the sheets. This sequence was than used as my bump map, and it worked quite well. Make your water surface blue and keep your light white for best effect. GT
