Fred: I saw a fix for that problem. A program that goes in the
startup-sequence that slows everything else down 'till the slower drive catches
up.
Program's called SetBatt and it use for the problem is detailed in Dan
Barrett's "DOS Upgrade Blues" article in the February AmigaWorld pp. 23
It says the program is NOT well documented and could cause problems, so I'd
proceed with caution…

Thanks for the info. I did a little more research and found out that if I bring
up the early startup control screen, that even if my boot partition is listed
as available, I still get the load boot floppy animation a couple of times
(although it is not listed on initial boot, so the spinup problem is definitely
there, too). So, something even wierder is going on here. I am going to try it
with some other drives. I also occasionally get a disk error on my workbench
partition, but when I do all the disk diagnostics, nothing comes up as bad and
when I hit retry it ALWAYS succeeds. Maybe it is a cable problem.
Also, when I disconnects the second drive and changed the boot drive from
master to only, none of these problems occured. However, all drive jumper
settings are correct. Arrrrrghhhhhhh. This is a minor annoyance compared to the
flyer/Toaster 4.0 hangups.

The IDE warm-boot problem is a bug in WB3.0. I had the same thing and
Commodore took the machine in for inspection and acknowledged that it was a bug
on their part. It was promised to be corrected in WB3.1. However, I haven't
tried the WB3.1 ROM's currently on the market so I don't know if it was fixed
or not.
In any event, you get used to warm-booting. Becomes a reflex.

Thanks for the info. I won't waste another night on it! It just is
weird that it worked with the 120/240 combo, but doesn't with the
850/240 combo.
I have heard that 3.1 isn't very friendly with the Toaster, and all
of the support software, so I won't be upgrading very soon, either. Gosh only
knows about 3.1/flyer compatibility.
Now if I could just figure out how to get all of the graphic modes back!

That's the spirit! <G> I was so irritated by it that I literally threatened
Commodore with litigation. They took the machine in, examined it and (much to
their credit in my opinion) admitted that it was a problem with WB3.0.
Since then I've grown accustomed to simply re-booting. Not a big deal at all
after you've done it for a while. Just becomes another little habit you don't
even think about or pay attention to. (I'm running with Maxtor 540Mb drives for
whatever that's worth.)
I hadn't heard about any problems with WB3.1, but I haven't been paying
attention either. My personal feeling is that I didn't want to take the risk of
experimenting with what I consider to be an unsupported product of that kind.
Anyway, just ignore the irritation of needing to essentially boot twice:
you'll get used to it in no time at all. Of course, then you'll start doing it
with all your non-Amiga machines. <G>
