Ben, I hope folks don't mind a quick IBM question. I'm a long time photographer, but new to digital imaging. I'm interested in creating a watercolor effect from some of my landscapes. Peter Greci mentioned Black Belt's Winimages program as a possible solution. Do you have filters or any other automatic processes which could produce a watercolor-like result with Winimages? Don

WinImages R3, which is the currently shipping version, does _not_ have a watercolor effect. Peter owns both our IBM and Amiga software and got them a little mixed up – the Amiga software does have watercolor and oil effects. WinImages R4, due in 90-120 days, will have watercolor I believe. –Ben …via AutoPilot

Hi Ben, How much disk space is required for the WinImages R3.0 documentation? I have about 15M free and the setup program says I do not have enough space. Just how much do you have packed in the three disks? 73, Kelly

Kelly, Free another 1 to 1.5 Megs and you should be able to install the Docs. -GreG

The complete WinImages install is 20 megabytes – and it's probably looking for all 20, from the sounds of it. There are about 11 megs of "stuff" on those three doc disks, and they also include the Video For Windows v1.0 installation, according to the tech people here. A huge amount of it is text – which compresses extremely well – and then there's a ton of data (AVI's, animations, which are part of the docs, images, etc.). The entire WinImages install is pretty demanding. The F/x executable is about the size of IM R/t, roughly… 1.5 megs, about. Morph is smaller. Remember that it has to assume it's going to install Win32s as well… –Ben …via AutoPilot

>> Remember that it has to assume it's going to install Win32s as well… << walk that by me again… it runs under Win32s? (rubbing brain slowly yet painfully)… The only other thing I have that runs under Win32s is Freecell. Win32s is not 3.1 (obviously), it's not NT.. what izzit? I have a setting for my compiler to compile for "Win32", but nothing for "Win32s". This worries, me, frankly, Bem. Would you mind sharing the wisdom of your experience on the matter of Win32s with me? Okay… so do it anyway <grin>

Sure. Win32s is a "thing" Microsoft makes available that extends – ok, patches – Windows so that some, but not all, of the operating system works with 32 bit system calls and the like. It allows us, as developers, to create applications that (shock) use 32 bit instructions – something the Amiga has done since 1985. <lopsided smile> Applications that do CPU bound work – like WinImages, PhotoShop, Elastic Reality and similar packages can benefit a great deal from running under/with Win32s. Operation speeds in WinImages increased an average of 3-4x when we went from a 16 bit (non-win32s) to 32 bit application. "Win32" is, as far as I know, the same as "Win32s". Win32s contains some, but far from all, of the operating system calls that are available under Windows NT. That makes it much easier to create code that can run on both, or at least is a lot closer to running on both. –Ben …via AutoPilot

Thanks, Bem.. this was what I was thinking, so I'm relieved to hear that I made the right decision (well, if not the right decision, at least the decision I thought I was making <grin>) <waving>

Ben… Is Win32s supposed to ship with Windows for Workgroups3.11? I have some programs on my windows machine that send up an error message saying they didn't find Win32s. Do I need to buy it somewhere or can it be downloaded? Does it need to be called in the Config.sys or autoexed grrrr… or in the autoexec.bat? I have a couple of pentium computers at work that I am having lots of problems with and this happens to be one of the problems. I use PhotoShop and a Nikon slide scanner but cannot remember what program came up with the error message refering to Win32s. Thanks for any light you can shed on this problem. ..Carl

Carl, I 'think' a friend of mine downloaded Win32s off the internet, somewhere, so that he could run NCSA Mosaic on his Windoze 3.1 machine at home. I'll ask him about it if you want. Robb

Carl, Will do. I'll ask him about it tomorrow and hopefully respond to you tomorrow night. Robb

Carl, We ship Win32s with our product, and install it at the same time we install our software. I don't know what other sources you might have, but it has been my (admittedly short) experience that programs that need it – Photoshop, Elastic Reality, WinImages – will come with it. I would expect any legitimate program that needs Win32s to come with it. So call the developers of those programs you own which are giving you those errors and ask them – they'll know what the answer is. –Ben …via AutoPilot

Ben… Thanks for the response. I'll at least know what to look for the next time the error message comes up. ..Carl

Got the documentation installed okay now. Put it on another partition (one partition too many on this 170 Meg hard drive!) Took up about 15 Megs of HD space for the documentation. What idiot did you guys find to type all that stuff in <grin> Getting back to IM R/T for a second – is there better documentation available for the ARexx commands? Some of the commands are not very clear what they take for arguments. Looking at RAW.REXX, there is an imagenum arguement passed to it. Where does this come from? I don't see anything about it in Launch.rexx. Is imagenum always the number fo the Primary image? Also, never noticed a command to get the id number of the current primary image – maybe just not seing it. 73, Kelly

Kelly, The same doc guy who did the Amiga docs, actually. 🙂 Imagenum is something that is returned by most arexx commands in IM R/t that create a buffer. There are others too… look at return values from things like newbuf, if I recall (it's been a while since I looked at this, to be honest… Dave would know better than I) –Ben …via AutoPilot

<waving> Ben, the WinImages Demo is *big*. I thought you should know that, Ben. <grin>
#102304From: Black Belt SystemsFeb 22, 1995 2:40 AM
Big? What? You think 20 megs is BIG? You got a litte, weenie, insignificant disk drive, Jim? Just a wee, tiny one? I would have thought you had a BIG one, being a bricklayer and all, but, no…. it's just a microscopic thing, can't even handle DEMO software… <laughing> Yeah, I know. But Jim – seriously now – WinImages is one heck of a piece of software. –Ben …via AutoPilot

20 Megs? I didn't even know it was *that* big <grin>. Hey, my harddrive ain't weenie.. it's just real real full. Now, if WinImages is so cool, I can dump some of the other software I've been piecemealing with. And, yeah, I know WinImages is one heckuva piece of software… I've seen some other things the author(s) wrote. 🙂 <waving>

Hi Don, Ben was Lurking in the Photoforum and informed me that I was MISTAKEN. I had assumed that Winimages had everything that the original Amiga version known as Imagemaster R/T had. But he also told ,me the price I qouted was $100 too high too…… sorry Don 🙁 Midgard Graphics

Thanks for the information. I'll be on the lookout for Winimages in the coming months. Don

There's a WinImages Demo over in DTV forum you might want to try. I haven't had time to go get it yet, myself (besides, I have Imagemaster, which does watercolor effects <grin, duck, run> 🙂
