I recently did a major upgrade on my A3000 and have run into trouble.
I upgraded to 3.1, Buster 11, new WD controller chip, added a high density
floppy, and added another 4 meg of ram.
When I went to boot the beast I was greeted with a blank, black screen. The
hard drive is a Fujitsu 330 meg. When I replaced that with an old Quantum 105
the system started up just fine and I was able to install the 3.1 software and
everything is working fine.
I sent the drive to Fujitsu and they assure me that the drive is in working
order. They did replace the motor with a faster one but I still get a blank
screen.
Any ideas?
One more thing. My screen still shows the RAD drive I had set up but on a warm
boot all I get is a CLI screen with a cursor. That screen doesn't understand
any commands.
I'd appreciate any help.

Well, how are you getting the RAD CLI screen if the hard drive is not
booting? You are not making much sense. What it kinda sounds like is that
you have RAD set up with a higher boot priority than your hard drive, so
that when you turn on the computer everything is fine until you do a warm
boot. In which case, now the RAD device has been set up with a higher
priority and it takes over when the system is warm booted, dropping you
into the CLI because it has no system software to boot from.

I've got the RAD set up on the installation I did on the old Quantum I put in
not on the Fujitsu that was causing me trouble. I believe I stated that in my
message. With the Fujitsu installed the machine simply doesn't boot up. The
power and HD lights come on but I can't even hear the drive spin. Also, I can't
boot off a floppy with the Fusjitsu installed.
I've used this drive for over a year with no problems.

Paul,
Try booting the machine from a floppy an making sure you have the SCSI ID set
on the 330 HD the same as the 105 HD.

The computer will not boot from a floppy with the Fujitsu installed although it
worked perfectly for over a year before I installed the 3.1 ROMs. The power and
HD lights come and stay on but the drive doesn't spin and neither do the
floppies. The ID is the same as the Quantum.
This weekend I'll running the Fujitsu off my clone's SCSI controller to learn
if Fujitsu is correct when they say that there's nothing wrong.

Disconnect the high density floppy then try again. If it works then, find the
correct jumpers to change.

I'll give that a try and let you know. Not sure I understand the rationale to
that but I've played with different computers for years now and have learned
that there is no such thing as "this is the only way to do it." If that does
help I'm sure I'll be back asking why. I really want that drive to work and
the computer is working with the Quantum installed but having only 105 meg is
disappointing. On the other hand the price of drives has dropped so much in the
last few months I can get a much faster and larger one for a really good price
right now and they seem to be dropping in price on a weekly basis.
I suspect that the problem may be that new WD controller
and would prefer to have done all these upgrades on an incremental basis but
the A3000 with it's daughterboard and platform makes it a major pain in the
butt to do one piece a time, reasemble and test so I risked doing it all at
once. So it goes.
By disconnect do you mean unplug it, sent the jumper back to one internal
floppy. and reset the original back to DF0:?
Very much appreciate your input, Steve, and will try anything. Iv'e seen much
better systems for sale recently (now that many seem to be moving onto other
platforms) for about the same thing I just paid to upgrade this. I am also
building a massive tower 486 DX2 66. I do plan to configure it so I can use the
SCSI devices I now have if and when the 3K bites the dust. I still have my
A2000 up and running too.

I tried your suggestion and went back to the single double density floppy as
DF0 with the same result – a blank, black screen. I do get a flash on the
monitor when I first hit the power switch but that's it.
I installed the the Fujitsu in my IBM clone and the Adaptech SCSI setup
software that came with my Sound Blaster SCSI board lists the Fujitsu among the
available SCSI devices installed. I did not go as far as to actually install
the drivers and find out if that system would see a non dos disk. I feel that
as long as the drive is able to communicate with the host that the problem is
probavly with the Amiga.
My local repair shop also tried using the drive in an A4000 ith a 2091
controller and his system couldn't acess the drive.
I guess my next step is to backtrack and swap my old chips back one at a time
to see if I can get the drive back. That would be the WD controller and the
Buster 11. Or I could just get a new drive since the prices have dropped so
much.
Any other suggestions? Anyone?
