>>I suspect [Hires QFX -NT] will be shown at Siggraph<< It was at SIGGraph last year and NAB before that and maybe . . . I love Ron Scott's software, but the wait is killing me! Every couple of months for the last year and a half, I've surveyed the market for a core collection of NT programs that would make that a viable graphics platform. Hires QFX has been dangling out there the whole time. Now that we have an idea when the most important program of the bunch (3DS) will appear, I have a time frame and can be more patient waiting for the other programs to come on board|:^) -Paul

Something Just Hit me when you mentioned Ron Scott, I stopped by at thier booth at Siggraph last year and talked about the various software versions and platforms…someone mentioned that they were thinking of porting to NT and I think I just blew it off at the time as an operating system I'd probably never see running on any of my machines….what a difference a few months makes! <BG> Murph'

Murph' >>what a difference a few months makes! Amen. While I like Hires QFX, no one program is worth switching platforms for -unless its 3DS.<G> I'd been hoping that Autodesk would follow through on their 'commitment' to NT, but last SIGGraph was the first time I'd seen a nucleus of programs ( ER, HQFX, RIO ) running under NT, and I took heart. It's been a long wait and the next 10 (?) months will seem like forever. This summer we will have an AVID Media Suite Pro running under NT ( or maybe just win32) using a modified Targa2000. That will be our real first entry into the NT market. DOS is dead, long live NT! -Paul 'tired of apologizing for living in a DOS world' Lempke

My big bit of excitment is waiting for the final version of the NT version of the RenderGarden and what kind of chipsets we'll be able to use…DEC ALPHA would be _NICE_! <BG> Murph'

>>DEC ALPHA would be _NICE_! <BG> Alpha, MIPS, P6, PowerPC -very nice. So far, It seems that most DEC Alphas have been pressed into service as file servers -What a waste of megaflops!<G> -Paul

"-Paul 'tired of apologizing for living in a DOS world' Lempke" No need to, Paul. I still can see why people try to justify their software. As soon as you are getting cool results and your clients buy the thing for big dollars, why to apologize? 🙂 ana /kraz images

ana, >>why to apologize? Because, DOS is primitive, DOS is slow, DOS lacks standardized support for interprogram communication, networking, robust file sharing /locking, multitasking . . . DOS forces developers to use non-standard extensions like pharlap. DOS forces developers to work harder to do less. DOS doesn't fit people and the way people work. DOS created a huge market for Macs and Windows and Warp . . . DOS is like smearing red dirt on cave walls to make paintings instead of learning to make sable brushes, refine linseed oil and stretch canvas. DOS is a product behind its time. I apologize because there is no excuse for it anymore. Thanks for asking : ) Paul -Rising Star Graphics

Yeah, but 3DS runs on DOS. HiRes runs on DOS. TIE Fighter runs on DOS <bg>. Only when 3DS gets to NT, then and only then, I will trash DOS. I know it is a silly little tiny OS, but it has work for years and still works for me (because 3DS runs on it). Windoze doesn't work for me. NT will. DOS do. What do you find in common between NT and DOS? The one and only tool I will run on them: Again, 3DS. (yes, I am 3DS centered, ok? 🙂 I hate DOS for the same reasons and more. DOS is the past and will continue to be part of people's future (not me) for many years (specially for those waiting for Windows 96). DOS is what has/will kept many people in a nonstandard world, with a deficient GUI for past years and years to come. I want it to be trashed ASAP, althought you won't see that too soon IMHO. It will be in _my_ trash by Siggraph this year, but there are a few months between now and Siggraph. Again, the only _reason_ I am still using Intel based computers runs on DOS (note: reason=3DS) What can I do? I am not ashamed of that 🙂 ana /krazy images

>>3DS runs on DOS Yeah, I guess we could get into really heated agreement on this. We all use DOS because 3DS runs under DOS, except that it doesn't -it uses pharlap, which makes it just palatable enough. 8 or 9 years ago it was perfectly reasonable to pick an operating system to run just one program. If you only use one program or only one program on a particular machine, then it is reasonable -but, I think we have gotten past that. There are a lot of good tools out there and ideally you should be able to use them in a tightly integrated environment. Not everything should have to be an IPAS to work with 3DS. That is forcing 3DS to be your ersatz operating system; it shouldn't have to do that. so, when I say 'apologizing for living in a DOS world' I mean something like: Q: Why don't you use a modern operating system that will let you be more productive? A: Sorry, 3DS doesn't run under NT. 🙂 -Paul

Paul, >> It was at SiGGraph last year and NAB before that … I should have said shown for release. I think he was actually working on it two Siggraphs ago, but it wasn't important because everything else was DOS or Windows. John

John, HiresQFX: All we need is a core group of tools like 3DS, HQFX, and Elastic Reality running NT to make a viable system. By the time 3DS is out it should have some good company, then we can consider some non-Intel platforms! I'm counting on Hires QFX to be there; it has always been a good match for 3DS. Applauding your taste and discrimination, Paul -Rising Star Graphics

>> Applauding your taste and discrimination << Why thankyou very much Paul! I've always like HQFX alot; fast and powerful, and have wondered why it wasn't a more popular paint package. >> All we need is a core group of tools like 3DS, HQFX, and Elastic Reality running on NT to make a viable system. << Yes and its happening. I spoke with the Elastic Reality folks a few months ago and NT was in the works. Another very interesting addition to this software line-up will be Bravado by D/Vision, which promises to be a NLE with Hardware independence supporting amoung others, the Ill Pro, T2000 along and their own propietary board. And I'll add Photoshop which because of its plug-ins is really something. Very exciting times indeed! John

>>Bravado by D/Vision John, I like the folks at TouchVision -they are local and have even been a customer of ours. I play basketball in the alley with their former head programmer whenever the temp. is over 50 deg., but we never bought into their product because of the hardware limitations. I am very glad to see them moving away from the DVE (a standard made before its time -sort of like MS-DOS). We are very involved with AVID on the Mac side, so I'm sure that will be our NT & T2000 based NLE of choice on the PC -but hey, if they have something to keep our Matrox user's happy . . . -Paul

>> Avid on the Mac side, so I'm sure that will be our NT & T200 based NLE of choice on the PC… << Very interesting! The most recent word I'd heard on this topic was that Avid was going SGI. The people who I know who are involved with it on the Mac side, haven't mentioned NT with regard to AVID at all. Very curious. I thank you for enlightening me. This is more than a little significant. On an unrelated note… I believe I remember you saying that you liked the Intel boards with the Ill Pro. I tried installing mine on one of my P 90's and the board wouldn't be recognised. I triple checked that it was seated properly. Procheck ran but that was it. I also tried it on a standard 486/66 and it worked fine. It had been running it on an EISA 486. Is there some trick to making it work with the Intel? I have a revision 10 bios. Thanks, it would be nice if I didn't have to call Matrox direct. <g> John
