I am presently working on an architectural image in 3D Studio and am looking for good techniques for showing a foreground region of grass in the scene. The problem I seem to be running into is when utilizing a grass image bitmap (in a variety of mapping configurations and fashions) on a horizontally planar surface, the image always appears flat and fuzzy rather than 3 dimentional. If anyone could give me some good tips I would be extremely appreciative. Thanks in advance. Les

Have you tried different degrees of bump mapping using the same image?

Yes and it always seems to look like a lunar landscape in green.

Yea, I guess I kina know what you mean. How close are you flying in?

It is a "still shot" and it is in the foreground.

Ies, Try creating the grassy area with a bevel around the circumference or raising the area and using a smoothing group to round off the edges and then applying the same grass image bitmap you like and add a little bump map using the same image (maybe 5-10% bump) and you will end up with a dimensional grass area. This certainly gave some vertical feel to the surface however I am still having a rough time getting it to look like anything better than a green "moonscape". I have tried various mapping styles without much luck (planar, cylindrical). I'll keep trying. Thanks.

A couple other ideas you can try are: 1) If you total patch of grass is small enough, tessellate the path then select vertices. Then tessellate one more time, now some vertices are selected and other are not. Now you can move the selected vertices to try and create spikes. Try playing with the amounts of time you select, move, tessellate… 2) If the total path is to large for idea 1, then try to put another patch of grass under the first and use a transparency level on the top patch. Good luck. Zac (Delta-Z/AZ-TECH) Berkeley

Hi Les Give the routine Granite.sxp a try it works really good for grass. Try as a bump and a texture. Mike White [SDP]

Thanks Mike, I'll give it a try and let you know.

That would be great. Let me know. Mike
