#Upgrade to 4.1b
6 messages in this thread
I have 3 users who are already sharing the same address book that is located on
a network drive. Two of these users also share the same calendar which is also
located on a network drive. I'm assuming that none of them should be running
any apps from the Desktop Set while I'm upgrading the others, but do all of
these users need to be upgraded at once?
Michael,
I would avoid having any DTS applications running while updating; I would
update all at once.
Before you decompress the 4 update files, make 3 copies and use them on each
machine, or you will have problems with conflicting serial numbers.

Sounds like the serial numbers are used in some sort of file sharing scheme.
Now I'm not so sure my plan (see below) is so good.
I was thinking of installing Desktop Set so that the \DESKAPP directory is on a
network drive, and the \DESKTOP directory is on a local drive (or at least a
personal directory on the network). Then, the common calendar and phone book
files would be shared from a third directory. From the sound of it, this would
cause the same problems you referred to above. Would it?
Keep in mind that I would purchase the appropriate number of copies of the
software for the concurrent user count. Originally, we purchased less than the
required number of copies, when , after talking to a sales rep, I was told that
the network version would include 3 licenses, and would be available within the
month. That was almost 18 months ago. It's time to bite the bullet and buy
the individual copies. Then when we do buy the network version (I'll budget it
for next year <grin>) we'll have a few extra licenses.
Michael,
You will need to install the deskapp directory to your local drives. That data
directory ( desktop) should be installed where it can be accessed across the
network.
As a current user, you will receive some sort of credit for your existing
individual copies when the network version is available. You may want to
contact our sales department if you need additional copies at 201-909-8600.

We ran into a few problems with v4.0 when using a common \desktop directory on
the network:
1. the alarms and reminders would sound at every station
running the program.
2. the programs keep track of the last-opened calendar and
phone book. The person who exited the apps last at
night determined which calendars and phone books were
opened by everyone in the morning.
If these problems have been addressed I will move the \desktop directory to a
common location, otherwise I'll probably keep them on the local drive.
Michael,
Those problems will still be there in 4.1b. It sounds like everyone should
also have there own local data directory, and in addition shared files should
be stored on a network location. That way everybody has their own alarms and
reminders, everyone gets the last book or calendar they were using, and
everyone still gets to share information.
