#USR Sporster 28.8 v.34

Are you aware of problems with the USR Sportster 28.8 v. 34 and DTS? I recently
purchased 2 sportsters. I installed one in the office using an analog line and
was able to connect to various online services and use my DTS dialer. But when
I tried the sportster at home, although I could connect to on line services, I
could not dial out with the DTS dialer. I called US Robotics and they
expressed amazement that I had been able to use dialer at all. They said, this
sportster modem was specifically designed to prevent it from being used with
dialers in order to avoid accidental disruptions of data transfers. Anyone
encountered this problem? What 28.8 modems specifically work with DTS? Any
recommendations?

I use the new USRobotics Courier 28.8 v.34 Everything Data/Fax and in the
beginning had some problems with it not working right. Hanging up the system
was the biggest quirk I encountered, but after working with my string making
adjustments here and there, it now performs flawlessly or so it appears.
I also have an Intel 14400 Data/Fax and in this case it always worked with no
problems encountered in any way shape or fashion. Problem here is that it's
just getting old and the new stuff is passing it by rapidly. I still keep it
installed if for nothing else a reliable backup or if I need to use both modems
simutaneously.
Before upgrading to the newest Courier, I had used an USR HST 14400 with never
a problem that comes to mind even when using it in DTS. It just didn't have fax
capabilities which in this day and age makes it passe'.
Not much info here I suppose, but where one needs to contact the outside world
and can't for some reason or the other because of modems and incompatibilities
makes life miserable. I find that every bit of info I can get my grubby hands
on helps!

Thanks for the reply, Bud. You sure are up early <g>. Do you know if the
Courier has different capabilities than the sportster with respect to being
used as a dialer with DTS?

I really don't know if there is any differences as such, but i'm sure there has
to be somewhere considering the price spread between the two units.
One area might be is the new Courier is upgradable through flash rom meaning
that in reality you never have to buy another modem to stay in touch with the
latest technology. Nice feature especially when you keep price and obsolesence
in mind when contemplating a purchase and wanting the biggest bang for the
buck.
I just sign onto the USRobotics BB's and D/L the latest upgrade and follow the
procedures to upgrade, pretty simple and WALA we're current. Other than what
i've stated above I can't speak to any other features or attributes between the
the two, but i'm sure there is.

Carefully check all of your settings again and see if you can find any
differences.
You may consider using a back-up from work and restoring it at home to transfer
the dialer settings. This will overwrite all of your data, so make sure you
have a back-up of your home info.
If this doesn't work, we're not sure where to go from here. UsRobotics may
have been correct. We have had difficulties in the past with Sportster Modems.
We have yet to fully test 28.8 modems with DTS, but have had good experiences
with 14.4 models from Supra and Practical Periferals.
