All Forensic Animators,
This is the moment I've been waiting for. My first animation for forensic use
will hopefully be admitted into court when things start next week. I have just
found out I will be called to testify.
I know I have talked to others who said they had to do the same. I am wondering
what kind of charge people put on being called into court. Any input?

I thought it was your civic duty – you mean you can get payed for it? Maybe
someone will buy you lunch if you do a good job. I've got one appearing in
court in Hawaii next month. It'll be a bummer if I get called and have to pay
my own expenses.

Oh yes! Expert witnesses are paid professionals who support or impeach the
technical details of the case. (to Paul:) There should be several people
around here who can give you an idea about rates. I'd guess that $150/hr.
would be fair. A civil engineer I worked with would charge that for boundary
dispute testimony.

Sorry Dave, that was meant to be funny. Guess I should practice the art of

I agree with your suggestion. Although, to protect your relationship with your
clients I would make them aware of your fees up front, not the day before
court.

Congratulations Paul, its great to see things are coming along for you.
I have never testified in court, but I did have to give my deposition. The case
settled before it made it to court, therefore I didn't have to testify.
Your bill my be paid by the attorney on the opposing side. When I gave my
deposition the opposing side paid for my time, since they were the one asking
the questions. I guess it would depend on who is calling you to testify. I
would charge the same for court time as I would for developing the animation,
I'm assuming you charge by the hour. I would expect the attorney to pay any
expenses that I incured if it is out of town, also.
I'm sure somebody has some direct experience and can give you some better
