Any change (on a wholly other but unrelated topic) that the MeshPaint Demo has been uploaded and will be available on the same basis? Just anxious to try it out, and knowing that it's dependent on two sources — the wonderful sysops, as well as the uploaders themselves.

Mike, I was hoping to upload it Friday. I may get it uploaded yet today (Sunday). I'll leave mail to all once it's been posted, and then we can all wait until it shows up. Thanks for your interest, and patience. Brent

Thanks for replying. It's nice to know the status. I'm nearly of the opinion that, come tommorrow, I'll just call up and order it anyway (I've bought a lot less promising things on less information), along with MetaReyes (the T-Rex is a deal closer, but I really want Version 2.0) but I think others will want to see the demo. Hmmmm. If I order it tommorrow, I wonder if I could have it before next weekend…

Mike- If you order the MeshPaint 3D IPAS routine on Monday, March 20, you should definitely have it by the weekend. We ship UPS, and if you call early enough on Monday, we can get it shipped Monday afternoon. Depending on what state you are located in, you should have it within 4 days. If you have any other specific questions about the program, please feel free to ask. Right now the program is working greate. Painting is real-time even on our 486-33 machines. Carrie Haubensak

What's the price, and how do you order? Tim Miller Blur Studio

Tim- Thank you for your message concerning our IPAS routine, MeshPaint 3D. The price of the program is $499.95. You can order directly through us if you would like. Our offices are located at 1915 N. 121 Street, Suite D, Omaha, NE 68154. Our phone number is 402-493-6280 for any questions. To order call, 1-800-365-1002. fax 402 493 6254. With MeshPaint 3D you are able to paint directly on your 3D objects and the color is contoured to the object as if you were painting on a piece of pottery. 3D models can be rotated and tilted in any direction as they are painted. The zoom in/out controls allow for great detail and control. Once applied, the paint becomes a permanent part of the object. MeshPaint allows you to choose from various stamps, brush tips, and colors; or you can create your own very easily. An object is first shown in wireframe form. You can then adjust rotation and size of the object on the screen. After clicking on the Render button, the object becomes complete and the object is ready to paint. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us again. Carrie Haubensak

>>painting on 3D objects… One question. I run my 3DS screen at 1024×768 to allow greater detail while modeling. Most of the IPAS user-interfaces I've seen seem to have been created to a specific screen resolution. Does your software scale the working area to the screen or will I have to work in a relatively small window? Working at a scale as large as possible seems especially important for a paint program. JKJ, I believe that we are in a fixed mode currently. I may be mistaken. I will investigate and reply soon. Brent

Carrie, Are you able to paint over existing texture maps – say, to add some "dirt" to a map? From the last message, I'm thinking it only paints with a specific palette, that is, a designated color palette within the IPAS? Thanks! -Glen
#160026From: BRENT W. MALNACKMar 21, 1995 1:10 PM
Glen, Yes, you can alter existing maps. Simply load the image and you can see it textured on the object. From there, you can paint onto the applied texture. You have full control over the opacity, so you can add a little, or a lot. Also, any portion up to 64 X 64 pixels may be cut out and used as a brush. Brent

Brent, Sounds great! I'm looking forward to its availability. Are you guys selling it direct from your company or through one of the larger "IPAS channels"? Let me know when I can order! -Glen

Glen, It is available direct now (minus fancy packaging). It is also available from any dealer with the exception of Schreiber Instruments. Brent

John, Thanks. We like the IPAS Plug-in spec quite a bit. It will only get better with NT. Brent

Brent, I really like what I see of MeshPaint so far, but I have one major problem I'm hoping you'll tell me is fixed in the version to be released on Monday. Of the three maps I've tried so far (each with Planar mapping) they all appear to be off by a considerable margin when I apply the map to the object. In other words, I assign the mapping (as required by MeshPaint to actually work on the object), I paint the object, save the map, and then apply it to the object. It's then off in both directions — say around 1/4 inch on a typical object. When I go back into MeshPaint the map appears to fit the object perfectly (I'm using all the defaults in MeshPaint). Now, this kind of mitigates the use of MeshPaint if I have to then somehow try to line up the map afterwards, by either redoing the mapping coordinates or applying some kind of UV offset. Since it appears to be a consistent error, I'm hoping this is something you've already caught. Note that I haven't tried either cylinder or spherical mapping. Thanks in advance for any help. Assuming this is fixable this may be the most productive tool I've purchased for 3DS.

Mike, since the Positron folks haven't shipped yet, I'm assuming that they'd LOVE to get simple, reproducible problem cases from you. You ought to zip up simple .prj files that illustrate the problem, along with their maps and a set of numbered steps for them to reproduce it. Send that zip over to Brent, and I'm sure that he'll deal with your issues in an extremely timely way. – G

Mike, We will have the planar problem fixed by Monday. You may also be able to adjust the texture placement from within MeshPaint 3D. Brent

Will you be uploading a new version of the Demo? Judy
#160655From: BRENT W. MALNACKMar 24, 1995 10:19 AM
Judy, >>Will you be uploading a new version of the Demo? Yes. When the 1.0 version is compiled, we will make a new version of the demo. Look for it early next week. Is there something you were looking for in particular, or just the bug fixes? Brent
#160827From: Judy WellerMar 25, 1995 9:48 AM
Nothing Particular – but when I try out the demo – I would like to try a demo of the finished product not the beta version of the product. It makes for a fairer evaluation of the product. Judy

>We will have the planar problem fixed by Monday Thanks, Brent. Even with this slight problem I was able to do last night what I could never have done before (namely, make a decent looking map on an odd shaped surface). This program is fantastic, and I would think a must for nearly everyone. I also appreciate Carrie's efforts in tracking down my package (the snow here stopped everything!).
