Hi, does anyone have an idea on how I could create cell division within 3D Studio? The cells would need to divide and replicate. Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -Kevin

You could probably use the new version 2 of metaballs for this. Might be kinda tricky, depending on the amount of cells, but it could definietly be done.

Kevin: <cell division> I used skin and slice with highly transparent materials. Since individual slices are so easily animated, I was able to get the quirky to fluid motion of cells doing their thing. For added wackyness, Pennello can produce some terrificly nervous motion maps of tiny things. That motion map can be placed on background, or mapped to the skinned objects. All together, the view looked a lot like looking through a microscope into a petri dish. When I did the pennello segment I assigned the background a color of the gunk they use in petri dishes, with several different lighting highlights so it appeared translucent. Then the pennello settings produced various size squiggles and shapes moving in different time lines and at different speeds (various queue entries in VPost). Jeffrey

I've done this for one of our undergraduate biology labs. Its a bit tedious but it works. For algal cells took bevelled rectangular cubes and applied a transparent material to it. The cube had a small sphere representing the nucleus at its center. I then created another ide cell by copying the first cell and shrinking it to about half the size. This cell was superimposed on the original cell but placed at its median. I then duplicated this "half cell" and placed it side by side to the other "half cell". Now for the trick- You must make the mat transparent material of the original full sized cell fade to completely transparent and make the "half cells" start out completely transpar transparent and fade to half transparent during the aanimations first set of key frames. Still with me? The result should be two side by s side half cells which can then grow to the original full sized cell for the next keyframe sequence. I did this several times to show algal cell growth in chains and in sheets. In sheets you would have alternating division along the horizontal and then the vertical axis. For animal cell division it is a bit harder since you are dividing from single cell to something like the morula which is like a bunch of g grapes. I do this sort of thing for a living now specializing in Biology and Chemistry. Hope this helps. BTW I forgot to mention use the VARY IXP in the materials editor for making objects fade in and out. Go for an ipas like metaballs for the actual cell division. It all depends on what level of detail you are looking for. Are you showing the internal workings? David "Endoplasmic recticulum for breakfast, lunch and tea" Gould

Yeah, and it has to be fairly detailed, at least at the start. I am looking into Metaballs as we speak…. Thx- Kevin
