Hello, Sanford, I'm Phil, and you sent me something a few weeks ago. When I reread your message recently, I noticed you spoke of Animation Master. I am deeply intrigued about this, and would like to know more. Is it some sort of 3DS extension? Maybe a rotoscopic animator? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Animation Master is a animation apckage by HASH Inc. It has a really cool spline patch modeler for building organic shapes. I use it for modeling. Export it as a DXF file and then import it into the 3d Editor. Works great. ALex Imbastari Pixelathe

Hi, This is Phil, I really appreciate your super-quick response, but I'm gonna need a little more info: should I go for inexpensive IPAS packages to do seamless skins ( or buy animation master. Anyways, is animation master expensive? Where can I get it? How come we never hear about it?) Are you selling anything that could help me skin my characters? Thanks again!

Philippe, Animation Master is from Hash Inc. (206) 699-5360….It is not expensive and the new release is out this week…runs in windows, Windows NT, Mac, SGI, and Alpha, as well as the IBM PC. I use it as a kind of "super plug-in" for 3d studio. Super for organic shapes, then animate in 3D Studio. Good luck. Sanford

Thanks for the info. But will I need to buy Bones if I want to properly animate these organic meshes ( I most certainly suppose so…)? If so, where could I get Bones Pro for LESS than $500? Any studentt specials? Anyone selling it second hand? Is Animation Master better than Metaballs? Thanks!

PMFJI My tests with the Hash spline model to dxf for 3ds has produced meshs that are very useful except they cannot be boned or smoothed without holes showing up in the meshs. Ed

Ed, I am getting Bones Pro so that I can run tests to see how far a A.M. model can be bent and deformed by Bones before it starts to open up. Many models don't need much Bones type movement to animate them. Sanford

<I am getting Bones Pro so that I can run tests to see how far a A.M. model can be bent and deformed by Bones before it starts to open up.> Good idea. I bent the meshs quite a bit in my tests. Ed

Ed, Has anybody ever added up how much you would have to spend to have all the IPAS's? I'll bet its close to 20 big ones. Just Bones and Metareys along with Pinello, Puppeteer and Kai's power tools costs more than 3D STudio! Who said this would be cheaper than Wavefront? Sanford

Sanford, the point of providing an open architecture for 3D graphics is that animators only need to purchase the routines that they need to get a specific job done, instead of having to pay a huge amount of money out of the gate. This is the core of the entire component software concept which is being made possible by object-oriented programming tools and new operating systems. If your client asks you to do a metaballs effect, you can charge the client another $500 for the tools. Then you've got those tools for life. (Likewise with Bones, Puppeteer, or any other IPAS routine.) The individual cost of the routines is low enough that you can build it into a bid and the client won't blink. BTW, with Wavefront, if you want skeletal animation you have to pay an order of magnitude more for it. There's a big difference there. In the future, we'll all see professional applications migrate towards looking more like operating systems. – G

Gary, Undoubtedly you are right about being able to purchase 3D S power plug-ins piece at a time. My take on this matter is that: since 3D STudio with its vast array of plug-in is comming closer to competative parity with packages like Wavefront, it seemed obvious that a fully equiped 3D STudio workstation setup (if bought all at once) would cost quite a bit of money. I very much appreciate the way you can buy 3DS in increments. I would not be a 3DS user if I could not do this. I certainly cannot afford Wavefront. But, I am curious about how much a full power package of 3DS would cost. And if that figure was known, Would a bank finance the entire package including a workstation. I wonder if one might offer a fully loaded killer 3DS package with everything. Banks prefer big loans over little loans. Most won't do a business loan for less than 25K…so, because I am now writing articles about Pro Cgi…I am seeking this information. After I compile this figure, I will then be able to spell out what the ultimate capabilities of the such a workstation would be….I would say that it would cover the same, if not more, bases as Wavefront. No? Sanford

Just Bones and Metareys along with Pinello, Puppeteer and Kai's power tools costs more than 3D STudio! Who said this would be cheaper than Wavefront?> Well Ive had to dicipline myself for sure. It was easy not to buy page turn or bubbles because the effects are so specific. With the killer IPASs like meshpaint and bones its very hard to resist because they are useful in almost all situations. Since I dont work for clients I cant charge them for the routines. With NT, 3d accelerators, and IPASs like meshpaint at a tiny fraction of the cost of the SGI mesh painters, I have the feeling that some folks who have invested 100K+ in workstation animation may soon wonder if they are on the right path.Someone on the forum was talking about an Indy for 7k. I dont think that model is 24 bit or includes 3d accelerators. I used to do animation by making thousands of pieces of paper. I think im 20 times as productive as I used to be before I was computer aided. Since life is short Id rather spend money than time. I just got the Penello half price offer. Just what ive been waiting for. Ed

>I just got the Penello half price offer. Just what ive been waiting for.< I agree, been contemplating that myself. Just too bad it's not the full Pandemonium. 🙂 Hopefully an NT port will come soon. JNJ

Your getting close too over sixteen thousand dollars for all the good IPAS on the market. If you get puppetter and flock of birds add thirty five thousand dollars. The IPAS are still cheaper then any thing on the SGI. Mike White [SDP]

Ed, <<animation productivity>> I tried to do cel animation (I wanted to work at Disney) but I don't draw like a disney animator. But now I can drive a pretty good mouse/hot key workstation, so I am a happy guy. Thank goodness for new technology, 'cause I'd hate to be still trying to flip cels. Sanford

Edward, Well, things have changed up at Animation Master, so I'm not sure I will continue using it. Check out this quote from Hash, Inc. :: <<Unfortunately, A:M does not support any type of DXF anymore…. Sorry! Steve, Hash Inc.>> So, That means I won't recommend it to anyone else. Now, where do we get a good spline patch modeler? What happend to Danny Mercurio's? Sanford

Just Bones and Metareys along with Pinello, Puppeteer and Kai's power tools costs more than 3D STudio! Who said this would be cheaper than Wavefront?<<< Yes, there are quite a few that I would like that add up quick. Other concerns I have with certain plugins are higher prices and they may limit what will be in the core 3DS. I think plugin technology is the way to go, but some of the prices seem high to some people. I would buy some plugins if they were lower in price, and I understand prices are high because sales are low. Penello is the most outrageous in my opinion, but there are others. MeshPaint is getting raves lately, but $500 is just to much for me to buy it. I think $300 is a good price point for most plugins, the problem is the trend is going toward the $500-600 range. It is looking like 3DS is the render engine you use for your plugins. This reminds me of AutoCAD, a CAD engine that is limited in usefulness until you add a arch/mech package that runs several thousand dollars.

<<cost of plug-ins I think plugin technology is the way to go, but some of the prices seem high to some people. I would buy some plugins if they were lower in price>> Yes, indeed, Some of these packages are over-priced. I wonder if the market can support some of the costlier ones. Many users are hobbyists, and don't make any money with their systems. Its real tough on them. But, you just gotta have Bones and Meshpaint, and then you need …..etc…it's an addiction for many of us. Sigh. Sanford

Philippe, Sorry, there is no cheap way to get this software. Metaballs is totally different from Animation master and you cannot make the same kinds of models. Metaballs is fascinating by itself for the wierd shapes you can get. Animation master is much harder to use but worth the struggle. Get Playmation if you are short of funds. It is the same Animation Master and will export DXF, but it doesn't have IK or decals..Use 3DS for that. Playmation models are cool, but Bones can trash them if you are not careful.
