Not entirely true. I would love to have a 3000 at for as a workstation,
but I need 1024 x 1024 resolution on a 19" screen. CBM apparently wants to
break into the workstation market BAD! The machine is more than adequate
for most network uses, it's a powerful standalone, and Unix is due out
from (The new Unix that is) AT&T this summer, with CBM hopefully close on
their heels. What's the max on the 3000? I think someone quoted something
like 640 x 400, or whatever. Whatever it is, it ain't even VGA or
SuperVGA (admittedly many more colors, which is great) I'm no hardware
hacker, but it has been done before, CBM COULD have put in a higher res
mode with fewer colors, and as long as they were going to support
Multi-Scan, they could have put in 1024 x 1024 (black & White or 16
color/grey scale) CBM did not though. Now I know they aren't idiots, so
let's hope they have a graphics upgrade in the works SOON!
There IS a b&w super high res built into the 3000. And a very hi res with
4 color, all non-interlaced. Can't remember the exact numbers, but its
something like 1280 x 1280 and 800 x 980. Get the new Amiga World for more
info. (I left mine at work).
Guess what, Paul. They did. 1008×800 is a pretty good resolution, neh?
There's also a 1280×400 (I think). The 640x480x4 resolution is the
VGA-type resolution, but make no mistake and do NOT buy a VGA-only monitor,
be sure to buy a multisync type of monitor. The VGA will either not work
at all, or will only permit a couple of the modes.
One neat thing is the ability to switch these modes at will from the
Workbench and have (properly written) programs adapt right along with it.
So higher resolutions exist, although I do know that your statement about
higher-still resolutions is correct. They need them, and *I* for one
thiknk that they're on the way (the Lowell, Mass. — MIT project of a
24-bit color display board, for example <I **Hope** I have that one
right>
From what I just finished reading in Amiga World, there is a 1280 x 400
interlaced and a 1280 x 200 !!!!! noninterlaced. What in the heck do I use
that for?????!!!! The 1008 x 800 mode requires a paper-white monitor. This
all according to Amiga World and Amazing.
