Cando Update Bug?

Has anyone received their Cando updates? I'd call the company before
attempting an installation. My copy seems to have EATEN my program files.
Beware…..Nancy (NComming from Canada 8->)
Nancy,
I don't know if you meant what you wrote. The installer deletes
files on the master disks, then replaces with new ones. However, I had a
terrible problem with soft disk errors. I must have tried the installation
10 times, but at some point disk errors would leave the installation in
limbo with warm boot the only way out. I finally ended up with my master
disks totally garbaged. I couldn't even install onto a newly formatted set
of blank disks. Eventually, I just dearchived the files and copied them
onto the hard drive manually. Indeed the update procedure is flawed. I
just got my upgrade today, but I plan to notify Inovatronics and suggest
they arrive at an alternative strategy, unless my case was unusual. At
this point I have a working new version on the hard drive, but I no longer
have any master disks.
For those of us who received 1.6 at AmiExpo in Long Beach, there was a
problem with the update. For me, the problem was that the install would
not update the particular program disk I used. Inovatronics blamed the
problem on 2.0, and sent me another 1.6 update that worked.
I'm now a happy 1.6 user, and the auto install did a great job on my hard
drive. It saved my old CanDo icon so I could copy the old tooltypes (these
weren't copied for me automatically, unfortunately), and didn't overwrite
any of my decks.
In the envelope, a flyer mentioned a new "Auto Update" policy to
automatically send out updates ASAP and bill a credit card (no more than
$50 each) and including a money back guarantee. It sounds like they may
plan to step up updates, and may be shooting for something later this year.
You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?

John,
Well, I can't say my updating went quietly. I eventually just
copied files from the decompressed archives on the update disk. My
original diskettes are no longer viable, but I do have 1.6 running
successfully on the hard drive. I, too, got the flyer about the auto
update program, but haven't decided yet to return it. I don't know any
more about it than you, if your source is the same as mine, the flyer that
came with the update.
I am hoping to see a later version with a major change in the
interface which might make scripting a lot easier to do. I hate the
constant switching back and forth as I try to keep track of everything. I
would really prefer a more programming-like environment, but I realize
there are definite tradeoffs to provide the ease of development which CanDo
implements. Perhaps if it had a multi-window environment with one window
for the code development and another for the object manipulation, and yet
another to test the script for debugging. Well, obviously there are a
multitude of ways to do it, and no one way will make everyone happy, I know
that. It's still the best of it's sort in the market. Nothing else short
of ARexx with rexxarplib can provide such an easy program development which
is virtually complete in almost every way, short of the oddball way of
having more than one window open at a time! And to think, the PC world is
so excited about Visual Basic and Windows!!
I just recently installed my CanDo 1.6 upgrade without a problem. When
installing such a package I allways use a set of backup disks and not the
originals, then if I have a problem I call the company before I attempt to
continue. I hope you get your 1.6 upgrade up and running.
I always use backup disks, but, in this case, because I have such faith in
In Inovatronics, I updated BOTH my backups and my masters WITHOUT CHECKING
TO SE SEE IF THE BACKUP HAD WORKED. (A fatal error, and not a very bright
one.) Anyway, all is well now…..Nancy
I am happy to hear all is well. I am sure you will like 1.6!
