#A3000 Toaster help

Help… I have heard from several sources that the NewTek Video Toaster works fine in the A3000. I bought one, slapped it in (after the appropriate case mods) and nothing happened. The power light wouldn't even come on, the drives wouldn't begin spinning… nothing. I tried grounding the grounding clips but there was no change. Does anyone have any suggestions? I think this WILL actually work, there is probably something minor hindering me. If anyone has any information regarding this, PLEASE talk to me.. — Thanks, Mark.

Mark, An engineer from NewTek told me the VideoToaster works fine on the A3000 if you don't have anything else added that relies on the A3000's power supply. The power supply on the A3000 just isn't big enough. Do you have any other boards or extra hard drives etc. on the power supply? If so you can upgrade the power supply. Asked why they haven't modified the Toaster to reduce it's power needs he said that it isn't that simple. As soon as they start reengineering the board there are all sorts of other things they are going to want to add or change sooo it isn't something that we will see soon. Hope this helps. Carl

If it has a large enough power supply it should. I didn't ask him that specific question. He also didn't suggest the A3000T as a solution. Carl

I have heard the only problem with the 3000T is that there is not really enough room for all the connectors, although the card fits in, there is not enough clearance to plug a BNC cable in once it is installed Solution: Attach cable before plugging card in!

i'm no toaster expert (though i'd die to be able to afford one or work in an environment where they are used) but I sometimes pick up a copy of avid at my dealer. some months ago, i beleive they dealt with the installation of a toaster in a 3000. i recall a couple chips that need to be changed or someting like that. I had the same problem with my 3000 at first. Sometimes it would crowbar thPower supply right away… I could take out the card, start the 300, turn it off, put Toaster back, and it would start.. sometimes it took a couple tries… soon the problem changed so that the machine would come on right away, but wouldn't be able to come back if I powered down after some use and tried to start right away.. it needed a couple hours to "cool down". Now even that problem is gone, and I can use the machine regularly. I also have a second internal scsi drive in the 3000, but nothing else. I heard someone, maybe CBM, had a replacement 3000 PS that was stronger.

The symptoms you've described are typical alright! Not to sound too pessim istic, but sooner or later the same thing is going to start happening again. There is indeed a 200 watt replacement for the 3000, but it's not from CBM (although the board is from the same company that furnishes the ps's in the current Amiga line). See your local dealer if you need/want the supply, or call me at (201) 614-0878, normal business hours. Mark

They sure do, and are subject to the same trouble you're having. As a matter of fact, I've several customers who've had the same trouble with no extra load on the supply. Mark

Well, all of the people that suggested that the problem was the power supply, take a cookie – you were right. My brother also has a 3000 and the Toaster works fine in his machine. He was gracious enough to swap PSs with me and now my machine works. My local dealer said he could outfit my existing power supply with a 200 Watt upgrade but he had to ship the machine off and the price was more than I wanted to deal with. So, I'll use this other power supply until I see other signs of flake-outs. THANKS!
