Speaking of Stefan, I sent him $20 to register LHArc about six months
ago and have not heard or received anything from him. He was supposed to
send the full speed version of LHArc and the next version.
See my original post. I also sent the registration fee about 6 months ago,
and just received the registered disk a few days ago.
Michael,
What is the version of the registered copy? Does it do the self-extracting
archive creation? I've always wondered how to do that with LHA138.run. I
never could find any info on this feature. The IBM version does support it
in the shareware copy.
Chris
The registered version is LhA 1.50 and it does not, in and of itself,
support self extracting files… however the distribution disk contains an
evaluation version of LhASFX. Here's the 'contents' file from the LhA
distribution disk:
===============================================================
Disk Contents
===============================================================
Apart from the various text files, the following directories
are on this disk:
LhX
– Contains LhX, an extract-only version of LhA. Uses less
memory than LhA for listing/extracting files from
archives. Handles multivolume archives.
LhA
– Contains LhA V1.50r, registered version.
KeyBackup
– Contains copies of the keyfile. Useful if there is a
read error on the one in the `l' directory.
LhADist
– Contains LhA V1.50r, registered version. Redistributable
version. (See REDISTRIBUTION file).
LhAEval
– Contains LhA V1.38e, freely distributable evaluation
version.
LhASFX_1.2
– Contains LhASFX V1.2, freely distributable SFX archive
creator.
UNIXLHa
– Contains source for UNIX LHa V1.00, compressed with
`compress' and archived with `tar'. Not part of the
LhA package.
LHA-DOS
– Contains LHA V2.13 for MS-DOS. The archive is self-
extracting and should be executed from the `C:>' prompt.
ReArc
– Contains ReArc V2.08 by Mark Cassidy. This is a utility
that can be used to convert .ZOO, .ZIP etc. archives to
LhA format.
AX
– Contains AX V37.8 by Klaus Seistrup. This is an universal
archive extract utility.

Michael,
It seems a worthy collection of archive utilities.
When it says freely distributable, are there an intentions of adding those
files to our libraries for distribution to the members?
I would believe it'd be in our interests to convert some of the archives
to SFX type for our newer memebers. Some of them start out without the
archiver and want or need a better term program. It would have a bit more
overhead in the download but would be less time consuming than also
getting the archiver and learning its Shell command string to get at the
newer term program. Of course, later they'll download the archiver like
LHA138.run but it would be better for them to get a self-extracting
archive of the telecom programs to start.
Chris
Chris,
I'll see about uploading the latest evaluation version of Stefan's LHSFX.
In the past I have used the following with mostly success:
[76702,337] Lib:16
LHSFX1.LZH/Bin Bytes: 10368, Count: 137, 02-Jun-91 Last:22-Apr-93
Title : Creates self-extracting archives
Keywords: LHSFX1 SELF EXTRACTING ARCHIVE LHARC MIKE KENNEDY
This program will create self-extracting archives. It works in a manner
similar to LHARC and uses an improved version of the same archiving
methods as LHARC, but the files will extract themselves just by your
running the file. It is also VERY fast! Author: Mike Kennedy
I don't think you will see us accepting SFX from users for inclusion in
the library… it's to easy for someone to hide a trojan horse virus or
destructive hack. It's really up to the forum administrator. We do discuss
it on occaision, and I agree with you that things like AP, BT, and some of
the basic utilities should be available in SFX format.
Michael,
Your right about hiding the virii and trojan horse programs. I was thinking
more on the lines of the items that the SYSOPS keep protected from deletion for
first time downloads. Yup, just more work for the SYSOPS, this you guys don't
need. The term programs would be nice in self-extracting format. Toss in an
unLHARC utility and it be a nice first-time package.
Chris
Chris,
BTW… congrats on getting the court ruling! I had no idea it was in
litigation all this time. I'm happy to hear that you may, in the end, be
treated justly.
Sorry. I'd been on vacation and missed the start of the thread. Hope I
get my copy soon!
Michael –
I sent the $$, waited (and waited), and got
LhA Registered V1.35 (9.7.92) (c) 1991,92 Stefan Boberg
just before V1.38 was widely posted. I'm glad I sent the shareware fee, but
(as always) would like to get/upgrade to the 'latest' registered version. In
the disk you just got was there any CURRENT info on upgrade policies/methods
for registered users? Is it an active project … is Stefan still in school
.. ?? Thanks!

I've already pitched the letter that accompanied the disk, but here are
some exeprts from the docs & readme's:

Registered users!
First of all, apologies to those who have waited a long time for this to
arrive. I've been very busy with school and other things the latest
months, so I haven't had that much time to work on LhA. Now that you
finally get the registered version, I really hope you find it useful.
LhA is in constant development. If you have an idea for some new feature
or function you would like LhA to have, don't hesitate to tell me about
it. Also if there is something you don't like the way it currently is, let
me know too!

Michael –
Thanks for the info! I sure wish Stefan well but am amazed that he is able
to keep up with school and everything else along with a project as significant
as LhA.

I had exactly the same response from Stephan nearly a year ago. Sent ho
100sk and not heard a word since despite a letter and email.
Pete
Well, I figure I won't feel guilty using LHArc anymore. I paid for
it.
