Hello, I downloaded a GIF to IFF converter but the computer tells me that I need an apr Library. Can anyone help? I'm a little new at this. Matt.

Matt, Go to AmigaTech and look for ARP.LIBRARY in the LIBraries there. I forget which one but try this search string. At any LIB prompt type the following LIB ! bro/lib:all/key:arp* That should bring it up. Chris

Thanks Chris. I did what you said. I downloaded the arp library and used LHA. But it still says that I need an arp.library. Is there something that I skipped? Please help. I really appreciate it. Matt

Matt, make sure and install arp library in your LIBS directory.

Matt, I see your question has already been answered correctly. Yup, arp.library must be copied to LIBS: directory. Then run the program. Guess I forgot to mention that in the earlier POST. FYI, all files that end with a .library are kept in LIBS: and the Operating System expects to find them in the logical device drawer named LIBS: Chris

I don't know. I think my computer is mad at me. I put it in the LIBS/ directory. When I try to run the program it still says that I need a arp library. This is what I did. I downloaded ARP040.LZH and used LhA. Then two programs came out of it. One called Arp040Fix and Arp040Fix.a. So I put both of them in the libs directory. You see I'm trying to run a converter that turns GIF to IFF. Maybe it's talking about a special kind of arp library. Thanks. Matt

Matt, you got the wrong file. You need the one with the actual arp.library file in it. The one you have is a patch for people with an '040 system. Try ARPLIB.ZOO instead.

Matt, You got the wrong file! Its name is arp.library, those files you D'Ld are patches to fix it to work with '040 processors. Look for ARPLIB.ZOO Christopher

MM >>Maybe it's talking about a special kind of arp library.<< The "arp.library", was part of the "Amiga Replacement Project". It consisted of a several replacements for AmigaDOS commands, some new commands, a shared library, and an optional enhanced Shell/CLI. Someone had noticed that many of the origional AmigaDOS 1.2/1.3 commands used the same code repeatedly for simular functions. Also, that the AmigaDOS commands were written in the BCPL language instead of the C language which the rest of the system used. They re-wrote the commands using C, removing commonly used code and placing it in a library that all the command could share. While this lead to a 17K "arp.library", the library combined with the replaced commands, and several new commands was smaller, taking less disk space. The arp.library was also for use by third party programmers, and contained enhanced features such as better wildcard matching, and a file requestor. The ARP was rewritten to replace 1.3, and with the advent of Commodore's ASL.library, other third party requestor librarys, improvements to the AmigaDOS 2.0+ commands, and arp.library having compatiblity problems with the newer systems, — arp.library is being used less. The full ARP file is "ARPREL3.ZOO". This is (was) compressed using ZOO, instead of LHA or ZIP. You might find the "arp.library" by itself in the AmigaTech forum, in the "Libraries" area of the Library. Ron. – ap'ing with AP. (Eagles may fly, but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines.)

Matt, arp.library provides a file requester like the WB2.0 asl.library provides. There is a substitute for it. It is a greatly improved file-requester and when registered by the user (it is shareware, G SWREG) an authorization number provided via e-mail by the author releases a great many other features, like copy, move, delete, string search, File Finder, sort settings, edit wildcards, edit display settings, print directory… It can be called up anytime you need it on any screen or window. Fully sizeable and it provides you with a "history" list of what drawers/files were last chosen, also a user definable list of files your always using, but there are lots of other features, for example there is a way to select a path/filename and inject that text string into another less capable hard coded file-requester which FR couldn't bypass or use it in a text editor. Speaking of bypass, the name of the program, is FR_Bypass and it 'bypasses' the calls for arp, or asl, or req and directs them to kd_freq.library which will be the replacement for arp. You need to add a line in your user-startup calling FRBypass and place a copy of kd_freq.library in LIBS: I use Khalid's File-Requester everyday and its great, I like calling it up whenever I need to search for a file or need to 'inject' a filename somewhere. Look for FRQLIB.LHA LIB: 13 (LIBRARIES) in AmigaTech. An excellent File Requester that replaces the standard FR in WB2.0 and above, req FR and arp FR. Has way too many features to list here. Release 4.04. This is a functional demo of a shareware product. You can register online in SWREG, id # 286. Khalid. So, you don't need that old arp.library and your program won't even know it is not available. Christopher

Thanks Chris for everything. I didn't download the correct arp.library simply because I don't want to get a high bill. And anyway, I think I'm going to leave the AMIGA world and buy myself a 486. Do you think that would be smart of me? I'm starting college in September and I need a good computer to do reports on. But I'm so confused. Should I stay with the Amiga, or buy a new 486, or even a Macintosh? You see, the only reason I bought an Amiga was because it was not too expensive (A500 with 1/2 MB & no HD). But now that I started working, I saved up some money and want to get something better. Should I bother with the Amiga? Matt.

Matthew, to get a really worthwhile PC will take some serious cash, once you toss in buying the apps. What I'd do for now is get something like FinalWriter or, perhaps, one of the competitors, and invest in a laser printer, or high-end deskjet. That way, you have something that can do papers, quite well I might add (that's what I use here), and you get a serious printer that can move when/if you switch. Keep in mind, what I would buy is at least a 486DX2/66 with 8 MB of RAM and a 340 MB or better harddrive. Video should be SVGA, and the monitor won't be too cheap. You'll need hardware of that category to keep up with where the apps are going in the PC World. CPU, memory, and disk space hungry, like a vampire! Anything less will get left behind before you leave school.
