#Flatbed Scanners
13 messages in this thread
Hello to All,
Anyone using the HP ScanJet IIcx or the Microtek ScanMaker IISP with the Amiga?
I am looking at these Scanners do to their high marks they received from some
of the DOS magazines.
The main concern I have is; where to find the Drivers and what Amiga software
works with these scanners. Also, are there any Amiga Image programs that
support the TWAIN standard for scanners?
Any help on this subject is greatly appreciated.

I have only recently run across a reference to the 'TWAIN standard' for
scanners. Would you have any idea what it is, and whether or not any scanners
with SCSI or parallel interface could be TWAIN compliant? If TWAIN is yet
another 'requires a PC card interface' sort of thing, then there are no TWAIN
compliant ones for the Amiga, but if TWAIN is able to use a parallel or SCSI
scanner, then there might be.
I have an Epson EX-800C, and am very happy with it.

Larry,
I just bought an Epson ES-600C scanner, and it came with TWAIN software –
but apparently TWAIN only works on MSDOS machines. I've not yet been able
to even try out the machine because I had to order a cable and drivers for
the Amiga, and they have not yet arrived. The scanner can be used with
either ImageMaster R/T or with AdPro. With AdPro you must buy an extra
driver which retails at $200, but can be bought for less. I believe the
latest version of Imagemaster R/T has the drivers included. These are for
the parallel-port version, unless I'm mistaken. If they work on the SCSI
version, then I think I shall send mine back for a replacement, because I
believe I can use the SCSI version on my Toshiba notebook computer as well
as on the Amiga. At least, I see nothing in the docs to indicate that it
wouldn't work there. But I cannot get it to work through the Toshiba
parallel port, even though it can be set to be bi-directional.

Betty,
Thanks for the info on TWAIN.

Call Migraph! They are marketing the Realsys scanners with their own
software ColorKit pro. I just got one and its really nice! Fast! Hires!
Color Kit is evolving fast as well!

Well, I already have a scanner. It's an Epson ES-800C, and I am quite happy
with it, and the software I drive it with.

Larry,
What software are you using with your scanner?

MetaScan.

Larry,
I think TWAIN is a SOFTWARE interface standard for DOS applications, not a
hardware interface standard. Thus, TWAIN is useless for Amiga (and MAC)
applications.
At least that is what I understand TWAIN to be about.

p.s. Neuractor – anything since last time?
Thanks. I found TWAIN on the HPPER (HP Peripherals) forum.
We got a letter back from the Arkansas Attorney General, along with a copy of a
letter from US Cyberlabs. The US Cyberlabs letter basically said that we were
abusive and hard to deal with. We are just going to drop the whole thing. We
have no wish to deal with people who think the way they do. They have earned
themselves a couple of bitter enemies for their trouble, when they could have
had a couple of happy customers. Go figure.

Larry,
You seem to be repeating yourself <G>

Yep, I guess some people just don't want to do business. Maybe they are
supposed to be a tax writeoff, i.e. not supposed to make money (kinda like
CBM)
If you want some information on industrial grade linear motion actuators,
I can give you some names/address to contact for information. I believe
at least one of the companies had a rep or dealer in the Vancouver area.
Looking at one unit in the THK brochure specifying a repeatability of +/-
0.010 mm! And this is the standard grade class unit. They also have a
high grade and a precision grade class. Leads of 6, 10, and 20 mm per
turn – depending on size of unit. Just add your motor/electronics and the
index switch, and your all set.
It's a good thing I don't have a need for one of these guys right now.

I have the THK catalogue, but all that stuff looks too expensive (though their
linear slide bearings are reasonable). We are trying to come up with something
VERY low cost, with the hope of manufacturing it for a couple niche markets.
