I'm upgrading to 3.1 from 2.0 and my sales rep. said that I may need a Megachip 2000. I need to check what kind of chip I have currantly (my system is used). What are the benifits of this chip. Can I get by without the chip for a while. How can I check to see what I've got now. (I assume that 2 meg means that I have all I need) Wes

You can do 3.1 with your 1 meg Agnus, but you'll be limited. Upgrade to the Megachip as soon as you can afford to. With 1 Meg chip ram you'll have problems running a full complement of DVE's and even then, some of the more complex ones like the spinning planet or cube or even the screen flyaway's with the drop shadow won't run. Also, look for problems running anything else while you've got a project running, either multitasking other software or running the paint module or the CG module of the Toaster. Again, you CAN run it but it's kind of a pain. Later, Jim

You can enter a shell and type "avail" (no quotes) and hit return. This command will report the amount of chip memory (in bytes). I've used MegaChips in both our 2000-based Toaster systems for a long, long time (Pre-Toaster 2.0), with only one problem way back when. The first MegAChip board I got was "Toasting" Super (2MB) Agnus chips. I sent it back to DKB and they replaced it, including the chip free of charge. That's what I call service. Operationally speaking, our need for the 2MB Chip came about when I was genlocking some DPaint anims over 24-bit Toaster backgrounds. Both the anims and the backgrounds changed alot, so I was easiest to have both the Toaster and DPaint running. Without the extra chip RAM, they wouldn't run together. I'd definatley recommend getting a MegAChip as soon as you can afford it, and as I hear, it's necessary for Toaster 3.1. Hope this helps! Trent K. Johnson ReAnimators
