#Ideal PC for 3DS Rel.3
3 messages in this thread
I was at the NAB show and noted that Autodesk now uses Micron computers
as their "official PC." I'm a fan of Micron and live in Boise, home
town for the company. I wondered what the basic configuration of the
machines you use in the show might be? (processor, RAM, hard drive
size, display cards, etc.)
We currently use 3-D Studio Rel. 3 on a Compaq 486-50 w/ 16 meg of RAM,
a 500 MB drive, an older ATI VGA Wonder S-VGA card as well as a
Targa +64 card. The system is used in conjunction with a
professional-grade (3/4" SP, S-VHS, and soon – Betacam, possibly
Digital Betacam) video suite.
We're looking to upgrade with a new PC as well as some of its
components. What would you call the "ideal" system as a platform
for 3DS Rel. 3. Should we be looking at a Pentium-based system or
would we be better off with a 486-DX4-100MHz machine? d

I didn't know that! Of course, they don't let us go to shows that often, so it
should be no surprise. I'll try and find out the configuration of the show
systems.
Don't expect this to be the ideal 3DS configuration though. The main reason
Autodesk buys computers is to run ACAD, I'd guess. 3DS would be an
afterthought, and it's hard to imagine someone in our Promotions department
putting together a system for 3DS without asking Product Support for ideas (I
don't recall hearing from them). This paragraph is speculation though.

Kevin,
>> CPU
Well .. the most ideal system for 3DS is obviosly the fasted Intel based PC you
can afford. We just started carrying 90MHz Pentiums the beginning of this week
.. that about the fastest I know of.
>> graphics card
Well, we just started carrying the Pegasus 4MB. It'll do 1024x768x16M colors
and is supported by the Vibrant in-line driver. It'll also do 1280x1024x64k
colors.

Since you already have a Targa+ frame buffer, I'd get the PAR with either the
1GB or 1.7GB HDD.
