DOS Command Line for Win
16 messages in this thread
Apparently there are several applications out now that enable you to do a DOS
command line through Windows, including one by Phar Lap which I'm sure was
designed with Programmers in mind. PC-Tools for Windows as well as the DOS
version also has this feature. However Praxim does seem to have some very
intelligent features.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I will certainly look into it.

Ya right! <g>. But that'll take all the adventure and mystery out of windows!

Now that's a great attitude! Unfortuneately, I've been spoiled by 3DS whose
adventure and mystery is much more to my liking. 🙂

John,
<<(Now if we can only get Windows with a stable memory management scheme <g>)>>
Maybe within Chicago, Daytona or Cairo, with three shots who could miss. Okay,
Okay, enough harping on Gary. <BG>
Fred
>> Maybe within Chicago, Daytona or Cairo… <<
I'm sorry Fred but I totally missed your point/humor especially the part about
Gary. I'm usually pretty good at abstracts but this one is over my head. <g>
-JE
John,
Sorry, the city names are the next names for Windows, Chicago is the next
release of Windows, which will not have to be run on DOS. Daytona will be the
next release of Windows NT, and should be out soon. Ciaro will be the next
generation of Win NT and is expected in early '95.
The Gary I was referring to is Gary Gates, the guy we made a billionaire<G>.
The use of Gary was a bad choice on this forum. );^{
Sorry for the confusion.
Fred
Fred,
I didn't know they'd named the releases after cities. I guess they figure that
at least which ever city they mention will be a market. <g>
As for the Billionaire, I thought his name was Bill Gates not Gary Gates. As in
"Bill"-ionaire Gates. O.K. so one stupid joke deserves another. <G>
BTW I just got the new Phar Lap for Windows Demo and it works as advertised.
Almost 3 times the price though. Its pretty slick though.

What's PharLap for Windows?
John,
Pharlap for Windows should actually be called DOS for Windows as it provides a
stable DOS environment for working in Windows amoung other things. Basically
its a shell for launching Windows apps with an emphasis on full DOS in Windows
support. No floating windows which for me is a big plus.
They have a demo version which you can obtain by calling 1-800-292-9622
John,
You know I questioned myself on the Gates name for quite a while. I must know
a Gary Gates, of course, you are right it is Bill. I must be aging faster then
I think. <g>
<<I guess they figure that at least which ever city they mention will be a
market. <g> >> That might be part of the philosophy, but Cairo(?), is that
Illinois or Eygpt. The next names will be Cleveland and Boise, you would think
they would choose NYC of LA, and really grab a big share. <G>
<<Pharlap for Windows>> Do you know if this will work with WinNT? Not
everything will. Over all NT works for me, but I wish they would get some more
apps that are specific to the system. It seems alot of the ports are waiting
for the others to go first or maybe they are waiting for Chicago. Either way,
if you don't know maybe Gus will pipe in as he seems to keep up on NT.
Just remembered the phone number in your other message, so I called and got the
Demo. I'll let you know.
Fred
Fred,
Phar Lap FrontRunner is apparently only designed for Windows. I guess they
figured NT didn't need it.
I don't follow Microsoft's naming scheme. Somehow that doesn't really suprise
me. I imagine it is Cairo Illinois but then why would they back track from
Dayonta to Cleveland to Boise. Next it'll be Annaplis or Atlanta. <g> (Because
they're secretly planning to drop Windows. 🙂
I just learned the specs on the P6 today, due out early next year. 250 MIPS I
guess at that speed you could run 3DS under Windows and it would still be twice
as fast as a P5. Due out just in time for R4. Autodesk has a lot of clout
don't you think. <G>

How many MIPS were the Mainframes running at ten years ago? This industry is
unbelieveable. We may be the first generation to see our childhood fantasies
come to life. Dick Tracey wristwatches, Lost in Space (that poor cosmonaut),
TV Walls, automated kitchens (ala Jetsons) these things are already here or
just up ahead. Amazing! Just look at Ed Kellerman's house. 🙂
Well, Frontrunner is on its way, so I'll give it a shot under NT. Who knows it
may be one of those querks that works and I'll be able to do everything from
one boot. <NOT>

Fred,

Well my grandmother, who has since passed away several years ago, was born in
1890 and in 1969 she watched a man walk on the moon on T.V. Something that
twenty year old's today (a generation) only know from news reels. The point
being, I don't know whether we're moving forward, sideways or backward. But
we've had tremendous advances in the hardware side of computers. The real
question it seems to me is how to assimilate the tremendous amount of data
being generated, (notice I didn't use the word information) which seems totally
unmanageable in its current state. I think this is the biggest challenge for
the next century. As an example, try reading a day's worth of Internet. <g>
On another note, isn't it interesting that this generation (twenty year old's)
have grown up with Star Trek and are psychologically prepared to meet aliens
from other worlds, while at the same time the space shuttles are not capable of
geo-synchronous orbit. Most curious world we live in. <g>
It took about a week to get the Phar Lap Frontrunner, hope it works for you.

John,
Good points, all.

I tend to use the "C" (catch-up) key code alot. I find the 'Net' to be rather
borish as compared to this cyberspace haven. This forum seems to be alot more
focused then the newsgroups. I need only point to the recent message about 3DS
bashing.
BTW did you order your copy of the Cserve CD? What will that hold?

My daughters (9 and 7 years old) seem to understand and embrace STNG with no
hesitation except for the frightening aspects of intergalatical exploration.
They also find the "Wormhole" in DS9 to be fathomable. But at the same time
they no little about the Space Shuttles. This is probably my fault. (:-(
On my cable system (TCI), when a shuttle goes up they have 24 hours a day
coverage, with a feed from NASA. At times it is boring with a graphic of the
shuttle orbiting the earth, but when the astronauts are doing something they
show you a live feed on the screen. I marvel at this! When they walked on the
moon, you didn't see it for quite some time, can't remember the delay, they
might of had to wait to develop the film <G>, but it wasn't spontaneous. Now
we can watch,as well as the dreaded Russians, the astronauts as they work,
including all of the blemishes. All in a days work.
Hey who knows, we may meet on the promenade at Jupiter for the '27 Siggraph.
Won't 3D rides be a bore?
Here's to you from my 486/50 soon to be a 786/2000.
Fred
Fred,
Very intresting observations. I agree about the "Net", but there's a lot of
information going throught it. 3DS Bashing, BAH! Only by idiots that don't know
what they're talking about. Nobody I know or have ever heard of that bought 3DS
didn't like it. I'm sure there's a few out there and some people have gone on
to Wavefront, but the number is very small, as opposed to say Topas which many
many people have bailed out on. O.K. enough is enough!
I haven't ordered a copy of Cserve CD. Should be interesting though.

That is classic!
