#A PAR Question
9 messages in this thread
I rendered a whole set of frames out to Targa files recently. They were field
rendered to 512 X 486 24 bit files and, just to get an idea of the timing, I
assembled then on my PAR to look at the segment. (The original files won't go
on my PAR, but will get single frame recorded on my U-Matic deck at work)
There was a **lot** of flicker evident on the PAR that was not evident when I
finally recorded them to tape. What field order does the PAR use? Is there a
way to tell it what order my Targa frames are in when I assemble the animation?

Why not render to the PAR and just dub to the 3/4" deck? You'll probably get
as good if not better quality, and it's a heck of a lot faster!
Just switch the field order from the menu on the PAR.EXE and copy a few frames
over. It sounds like that's your problem.

Greg: Thanks, I'll try it. I thought of rendering to the PAR and dumping it to
the 3/4" tape, but there are a few problems with it: I'm using my home machine
as an extra rendering station while the two networked machines at work render
along. I end up with about 2700 frames total and it is easier to record them to
my MO disk at home and then dump them to my DAT tape for transport to work than
it is to transport the work frames to my home machine, pull the U-matic machine
from the rack, get a property pass, drag it all home and record. I've got, all
told, about 6 sides worth of 300 MB per side MO cartridges full of frames. I've
been rendering for several weeks now, spending most of my time swapping to
disk.
Now that the rendering is mostly done (I'm cleaning up occasional problems
now) they've gone and canceled the *$!%* building project that this is a
walkthrough of. (so I've added a short sequence where the building melts back
into the parking lot…)

Chris:
Wow, what a hassle with all of that hardware! After I read your note I thought
that it might be easier for you to use your PAR and its hard drive as the
portable media vs. the MO and the DAT. Probably still need to get the property
pass though. 🙁

Bob: Had I realized the extent of this project before I started rendering it I
might have rendered all the Targas to the PAR resolution instead of the Targa
resolution and then brought it all home and assembled it on the PAR.
One of the biggest problems that I had was that my animation system at work
blows up regularly with these two big models, so I didn't poke around and
render enough stills to find all of the problems with the model. The fast
preview blows up too, so pacing was a problem.

Paul: The people at work like the melting building too. The killer with this is
that the building isn't a project for a client – **my** research group was
going to move into it!

Chris, It sounds like your fields were reversed. Since they were fine on tape
it is most likely the PAR causing the problems. I have this happen on occasion
and have yet to pin it down. Turning off my machine and then turning it back on
is the only thing that seems to fix it. It is something to do with Razor Pro
(at least for me). In your PAR.EXE in the preferences the field order should be
2. If you set it from Autoexec.bat using PARDRV it should be 1. In 3ds.set it
should be 1. I'm actually dealing with this problem right now, and it can get
to be a real drag sometimes. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll look at the field ordering setup. I never had any problem laying
the targa files to tape or rendering directly to the par, just in importing the
series of .TGAs to the PAR.
