#Windows 95 and 3DS4
15 messages in this thread
I have Windows 95 but have not installed it because I know there is going to be
problems with 3ds4. What do I need to do or get to run 3ds under Windows 95. I
know ther is some info about running it as a dos program under Win3.x will this
work for Win 95?
We are currently using 3DS R4 under WIN 95 and haven't had too many
toubles running it in Windows. It took some tweaking to get the
memory allocation just right but it runs fine now. WIN95 allows you
to run 3DS in its own dedicated DOS area just like you would if you
were running it under normal DOS without WIN 3.11. I've been able to
run it in the background while running COREL DRAW 5 and COREL
PhotoPaint Plus to generate vector and raster images for 3DS textures
and objects. Of course I have a lot of memory to handle the tasking
(64MB).
You know what they should do is recompile the pharlap DOS extender to
run in NT mode and then you could really do some serious 3DS/WINDOWS
multitasking with very few hang-ups! Or better yet, an NT/WIN95
version of 3DS that runs on Intel, MIPS & Alpha and written utilizing
that HOOPS 3D technology Autodesk bought. But I guess I'm getting
ahead of myself
Perhaps you have missed all the news but the next release of 3DS IS
reported to be a Windows NT version.
Could you be so kind as to share your memory settings and other
"tweakable"
parameters with us. I'm sure there are several folks here who would
benefit from this information.

Mark, No, you're not getting ahead of yourself. Autodesk announced a
few weeks ago that R5 will be for NT. (Not Win95 though). It's gonna
be killer!
That is a good news. I also have win95 at hand, but likes to know if
most or all my window or dos software will run. Have you tried other
graphic tools and games? Such as Director, Elastic reality, Fractla
design painter?
Mark,
What settings did you set up in Win 95 to get it to work? I got it to work in
standard VGA mode, but it didn't like the vibrant drivers. I also added the
phar lap driver to the system.ini.
Thanks

Dale,
We have had reports here on Compuserve that 3D Studio will run under Windows
95, however we have not done any testing on this as WIN95 is not an officially
supported platform.

I have Windows-95 "Final Beta" running on my 486/50 (16MB) machine. When
Windows-95 is installed, a new version of DOS is also installed. I have 3DS R4
on this machine also. There are several ways to go to DOS.
1) At Boot up time, type f8, then select DOS to boot up. 3DS has run fine when
the machine is boot to DOS.
2) If you are in Windows-95, you may select "Restart the Computer in MS-DOS
mode". Again in this
mode, 3DS runs fine for me.
3) Select the MS-DOS PROMPT from the Windows-95 menu. 3DS does NOT run this
way, you get a Phar Lap err 74. error in this mode. In this mode, Windows
is still running.
I simply choose the first or second path to DOS and 3DS runs fine for me.
RayMan- For those with RayMan, the same applies, but you must also
type the SHARE command, because the Windows-95 installation will take
execution of SHARE out of your autoexec.bat and you can't put it
there. Also, SHARE.EXE no longer resides in the DOS directory, it
resides in the \WINDOWS\COMMANDS directory along with other DOS
commands which are moved.
I hope this information is helpful.

Just a note re: my experiance with '95. 3ds seems to run fine out of
the windows interface without exiting to dos mode ( completely out of
windows) The only problem is that when I quit 3ds and it should
enter back to win 95 automatically it hangs due to some type of
memory or display type glitch. I am feverishly trying different
display modes and the like but so far to no avail. If any body has
sucessfully run from within windows 95 without exiting to DOS mode
first please share your secrets.
That's interesting that you can run 3DS from Windows-95.
If I try to run it, I get the error:
Phar Lap err 74: Can't use -REALBREAK under this version of DPMI
I suspect, though that in running 3DS from Windows, you're losing some
resources (memory) that Windows continues to hold on to as opposed to
running it from pure DOS mode.

PS: if 3DS R5 is, in fact an NT program I wonder if it will run under
Windows-95.
I have 3ds v.4 running just fine under win95 without anylockups or slow downs.
I did have to add the line in my system.ini to ready
device=c:\3ds4\pharlap.386. That solved the -REALBREAK problem. I can also
alt+tab between windows and 3ds without any problems. BTW Im running a P-90
with 32 meg. of ram, #9GXE-64 display card. and Windows95 pre-release.
Gregg,
I added the device=c:\3ds4\pharlap.386 to my system.ini which got rid of the
-REALBREAK problem, and 3ds R4 appears to run OK, now under the DOS prompt, but
I CANNOT ALT-TAB between 3DS and other Apps. I just get a BEEP. I have to quit
3DS. I can then ALT-TAB between the DOS window and other Apps.
I am running a 486/50 with 16Meg of memory and Windows-95 prerelease.
Jim
under properties did you have ALT+TAB checked on the MISC tab. ALT+TAB works
for me.
RE: ALT+TAB
That's a good question, I'll have to check that. Unfortunately, my 486 PC is
in the shop getting some more RAM and Hard Drive installed, so I'll have to
wait to check it.
Thanks,
Jim
Greg, Please see my message to Jonas on my Win 95 install. I'm running the
Final Beta version and it wont task switch. did you do something special? I
have all the Task keys enabled.
