Hi, Got a really odd problem. I just installed a seagate 2.4 scsi HD. On a p5/90 PCI with an adaptec 2940 card. Seems to be running fine…except in 3DS A two meg DXF load from the IDE drive takes about 3 minutes (no welding) I gave up after 10 minutes from the scsi. the drive just sat and blinked every seven seconds (just a blip) all other packages tried seemed to perform ok. oh yea…one other problem. I wanted to use the scsi drive for the pager in autocad. This caused Autocad to crash and burn with pharlap "EREAD 5" error. does this mean autocad/3ds/pharlap don't like scsi/pci ? Thanks for the knowledge Todd

Well, I have a similar setup (Pentium 90, Adaptec 2940, Seagate 2 gig drive), and it runs just fine in both Autocad and 3ds. did you try to load the same file from the IDE and SCSI? Or were they different files? did you run configphar.exe to reconfigure your swap space to the new drive? If it makes any difference, I almost never load DXF files directly into 3ds anymore, unless they are very small (less than 2000 faces). I always export binary from autocad and use DXF3DS to convert them. It runs a lot faster and lets you know how far along it is as well. forgive me if you already new all of this. If you already knew all this, forget what I said

Yep our setups sound the same. I'm still green so your questions are valid. The SAME dxf file was tested on the IDE & SCSI. I did not run configphar.exe for the swap file….is this for autocad or 3ds? my understanding of the autocad modification was to go into the config …console parameters and just tell it where the new pager directory was. I did no reconfiguration within 3ds for the scsi. I all did was try to retrive a file from it. Thanks for reminding me about dxb's. I'm so use to dealing with architects that expect dxf's that I completly forgot about them I'm glad DXF3DS has a % complete. I was going to ask Yost Grp for "Hi I'm alive" counters to be placed in all loading/importing functions. ….do I wait ….do I reboot…do I drink coffee….do I go to something stronger? Thanks for the suggestions. I will beat the system up on monday. Todd

>>I did not run configphar.exe for the swap file….is this for autocad or 3ds?<< Both. It is part of the Pharlap DOS extender. It sets certain settings. There is a bunch of stuff about it in the installation guide for 3DS and autocad. >>….do I wait ….do I reboot…do I drink coffee….do I go to something stronger?<< (G) This is why I mostly use dxf3ds. It is nice to know if you have a minute or five hours to go until it is done. I don't know why your dxf file would take longer on the SCSI. It sounds weird.

Well, I've done a cursory review of configphar… I'm not going to touch it until deeper thought. in regards to DXF3DS. I have the version that is on ASOFT as 'MOST CURRENT" you mentioned you are getting a counter of some kind. when I run it the output is silent. There is no mention of a verbose setting. PS I am trying to load in a 9MB dxf binary file It is ALL 3dfaces. Question: Have you noticed any performance differance on your system in regards to ide vs scsi? Thanks for the education. Todd

What I mean is I can watch as it loads faces in, it tells you what element it is on, then when it is done loading the file, it gives you the vertice and face count for each object it is presently working on, which is more than you get when you load directly. It does not have a gas gauge, or percent sign. I have the same copy you have no doubt. It was created back in 91. Most objects I import go over the face count of 3d studio, so I have to break them up into pieces in order to get them in, so when dxf3ds tells me which object it is working on, I have a good idea how long it is going to take.

ok…my version of DXF3DS is behaving the same. really strange though, I broke my autocad file up to 13,000 face sets I am getting acceptable loads via 3DS / load dxf (5 minutes +-) I gave up on DXF3DS after a couple of screen fulls of 'unknown object' (or some variation of that) and the count after 10 minutes was only 950ish. Both loads were from the ide drive. I have something really odd here. The only change in the system from acceptable behavior to unacceptable was the addition of the SCSI system. It's possible that I may have some 2 vertex 3dfaces being created by autocad (engineering software) which might explain the 'unknown object' problem, but I don't have any problems loading into 3DS. re: your system. I currently have 1 ide, 1 scsi, 1 cd. I will be adding a par/drive setup , and a soundcard. currently I have a 200watt power supply. I suspect I am pushing the limit now. What are you using? Do you notice any difference in performance between the IDE and SCSI? Thanks Todd

My system is very similar, except I have no IDE drives. I have a 2 gig, and a 1 gig scsi, PAR, Sound Blaster 16, ATI Mach 64. I think the problem you are having is because the dxf3ds converter was created when 3ds R1 was new, and it isn't as robust as the dxf import built in to the program. I don't know this for a fact, but it seems plausible. You would have to ask Gary Y. for certain. I have never gotten that error, thought.

Tim, Thanks for all the help. I will keep you in mind for the next hardware failure <G> Todd

>>Tim, Thanks for all the help. I will keep you in mind for the next hardware failure <G> Todd<< Great! As if the 50 I am already in charge of aren't enough, now I have you! 🙂
