Has anyone actually figured out how to get 3ds to run in a Windows DOS Shell. I've tried following the 3ds Manual and the info in Inside 3ds. Both crash promptly. I think it related to my video drivers. I have a Stealth 24. Anyone know how to do this thing?

Steve, I've got a Speedstar24x and have no problems with using 3DS in windows, one thing to check might be to shut off the video stealth mode, if it's on and make sure you are excluding video ram from a000-c7ff with the memory manager. Just a thought. TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F0007MGHHGD2A9BA

I am not sure if I know what those things are but I'll poke around and see if that leads me anywhere. Thanks. I'll take more info if you've got it. 🙂

The area to exclude memory for video would be in the config.sys file. The line would read something like DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM emb=32768 X=A000-C7FF ARAM=D000-DBFF, depending on which memory manager you use. The x=a000-c7ff excludes that area from use by the manager, again, your exact statement may be different, but the address will be the same. This may not be your problem, but it can't hurt anything. This info is in your dos manual or memory manager manual and can keep you busy for weeks to come<G>. Good luck TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F000FMGHHG57MG96HHBBC6A2

I will pass this info to my technical translator for prompt assimilation into my system. Thanks 🙂

Steve. Hope it helps. As of yesterday, one of my machines decides to reboot typing win, so I'll spend some time mucking around in the "pits" myself. Groooaaan! TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F0007MGHHG8955E5

I used th info you gave me to exclude that area of memory for video and I think it did help. It has let me come to the final '3ds under windows' hurdle I have to face. Now my tablet driver for my Wacom ArtZ is crashing the whole works. When I run 3ds under windows without my tablet driver it works fine. I am not sure how to fix this one since I have an internal modem and a tablet going at the same time. I don't think I have any com ports left. So the solution will be to get a mouse, tablet, and internal modem to work together in harmony, or to get a com switcher to switch between my mouse and tablet. . . . I think anyway 🙂

Steve, >>PMJI>>Just a quick note on your mouse/modem/tablet problem– Your cheapest and easiest solution is to use a BUS Mouse ($60.00) on IRQ2 this should resolve all of your IRQ conflict problems. -Mike Morgan

Someone else mentioned that. I'll try it! Thanks 🙂

Steve Glad you got some of the problems resolved! Mike Morgan sounds like he has an answer on your mouse problem. I keep the mouse and Wacom connected, but exit to DOS to run 3DS. I'm thinking I may have a problem with windows and Qemm 7.5. I'm a real dufus when it comes to the fine points of memory management. Get me into NT ASAP! I wish I could help you but remember I am worse than you at this memory stuff 😉

I've mine running fine on serveral P5/xx Mhz PCs. The trick is to use the Vibrant VESA compatible driver, instead of the card's driver. Download the latest fr. this forum and you'll see that VESA compatible will now handle up to 24-bit. [If you use the manufacturer's, it'll/might crash or corrupt.] I've been running smoothly for couple of months now & happy w/ the Windows OS's convienence. Big limitation is that I can't multitask when rendering on 3DS & work on other apps. Obviously you already know this, but just a reminder: Re-read your installation guide. Use the 3DS.PIF that ships w/ R4 or R4c1. Makesure to copy the pharlap.386 to X:\WINDOWS. Add device=pharlap.386 under system.ini {CSNav, automated} – TSL

I am most grateful for your thorough and reasoned response. Now the real question is not how to get 3ds to run under windows but how to get five Pentiums I can link together. 🙂
