Is anyone using Gateway PC's with Animator Pro? At work, we've gotten several of them and we have trouble with running any Animator programs in 1024×768. (ANIPLAY, ANICONV and ANIPRO) The problem is that there are random pixels showing up around the screen. Sometimes they are from the palette of the image currently be displayed and sometimes they are leftover from a previous flic. Also the menus have a 'dirty' look to them, ie they're missing pixels so they look like they have holes in them. The Gateways have a Diamond Speedstar Card in them. My brother has a Blue Dolphin computer with the same card with no problem. I use the TLIVESA driver. What is unique about Gateways? Randy

176,1651 (X) Randy – I'm using Animator Pro on a Gateway with no problems, although I'm not using the Diamond card. Gateway now has an online support section in the PC Vendors C Forum (GO PCVENC). You might ask over there if they know anything.

Are you running 1024×768?

Randy – I believe I tried 1024×768 once, but my graphics card only does that resolution in interlaced mode, so I normally use 800×600.

This is a 1 meg video card with an non interlaced monitor. I'm not intending to use that resolution too much but if there is a problem, I need to correct it before my office commits to a large number of Gateways.

I've posted this question in PCVENC. I haven't gotten a reply.

Randy- We just got a Gateway this week and use AniPro/ACAD/3DStudio,etc. We are disappointed with apparent compatibility problems that we haven't seen in other clones. To be fair, we haven't gotten through to a techie, but I'm dubious that this is going to be solved to our satisfaction. We haven't tried AniPro on it yet. More to the point, we consistently crash in AutoCAD when we use the display-list driver for the Diamond SpeedStar. Disabling it removes the problem entirely. We also get a high number of UAE's in Windows when using image-processing software. I would be very interested in what you find out, particularly as it relates to the Diamond SpeedStar. (We are using this card on 2 other computers and have been very happy with them.) –Noah

I tried to get 3d studio running on the 486 but am having some problems. I am going to pursue it a little more before I say it's the Gateway although I got 3d studio up and running on my 386 at home instantly. I haven't run acad yet on the Gateway. Animator Pro seems to be okay at all the other resolutions. Randy

I'm not aware of any problems w/ 3DS to this point. What is your difficulty w/ 3DS? –Noah

Randy, we are using 3DS on a network of 6 Gateway 486/33's in one location, and a smattering of about 4 more in other locations. We're pushing them about 24/hours/day, and they've been fine so far. – G

Noah, Panacea wrote the ADI driver which is bundled with Diamond VGA boards and hence with your Gateway sysyem. If you're getting AutoCAD crashes with your Gateway system, then you haven't configured things properly. Most likely, I'd bet that you're using the real mode DLD-VGA driver (found in the \ADI40) with Acad R10/386 or R11 and you have not set DLD-VGA's memory preallocation to TRUE. If you are using a protected mode version or Acad, then you should use the protected mode DLD386-VGA driver found in the \ADI41 directory. I'd be happy to look at your configuration if you can email me the particulars. BTW, we have several Gateway systems here in our office and they've run flawlessly for us. In fact, most of the DLD386-VGA driver which comes with each Gateway system was developed on a Gateway 486 system. Brad Ek [Panacea Inc.]

Randy, The SpeedStar uses memory address B000 to B800 for 1024×768 res. Sounds like something else is stomping that. Try excluding A000-C7FF range in your memory manager. Mike

Michael, Excluding that memory is a great idea, but the SpeedStar doesn't use B000h-B7FFh for 1024×768 resolution. Most VGA software only uses a 64K frame at A000h to write to the VGA. Since you can "map" this frame onto any region of the VGA memory, you are able to address the extra memory required for SVGA resolutions, including 1024×768. Sometimes you'll find software which uses a 128K frame from A000h-BFFFh, but that's rare because you can't use a mono board (which uses 32K in the B000 range) with it. Brad Ek [Panacea Inc.]

Randy, You might want to try disabling the Speedstar's turbo mode. It's not 100% compatible with all motherboards. I think that it's one of the switches right next to the VGA output. Brad Ek [Panacea Inc.]
