i'm putting together a demo diskette containing a bunch of still images…
does anyone know of a decent, low-cost "slideshow" utility for this
kind of application?… something capable of basic transition effects
(fades, wipes, etc.) would be nice… i've been able to find a couple
here on compuserve, but they haven't proven to be that great…

I take it you tried the freeware AAPLAYHI? VPIC + SLIDSEHW (both shareware).
My favorite which has all of the wipes, fades, fizzles, text/titles, sound,
animation, etc. is a program called ImageQ from Image North. ProVantage will
snag about $550 +/- for it but it really rivals most higher cost authoring
packages.
