Ted, >> What will this material be applied to? It's being applied to the dish of a lamp I have that was designed by a friend of mine about 5 years ago. She gave it to me for helping her move. I like her patterns and want to have CAD renderings of her work. So does she. The colors and materials of the dish aren't quite right, but you get the idea. Her name is Laura Drake, maybe you've heard of her. She's been published quite a lot. This particular lamp was in a gallery in Japan. Any feedback is welcome. By the way, did you have any luck with the "pea-green/powdery-brown blotchy look" for the dish that I was trying to achieve? When creating text in 3DS, I'm only getting the edges to appear at rendering time. To get a "block" or "solid" look, I DXF'd it into ACAD, rendered it there, then DXF'd it back to 3DS. I know there's a better way. What am I missing? TIM

>> did you have any luck with the "pea-green/powdery-brown blotchy look << Tim, I tried the material on a cylinder and it looked the same in the scene as in the ME. Maybe you had forgotten to do a Materials/Update at some point? Are you creating the text in the 2DShaper, then lofting it? If so, not having the start and end cap buttons on would give you only the edges in the 3DEditor. But, the fact that it renders in Acad might indicate that the faces are just flipped. Try selecting the top text faces in the front or left view and doing a Surface/Face Flip/Selected or rendering with the two sided button on in the render dialog box. I got the file and will have a look at it today or on Sunday. Enjoy the spring weekend! (Where do you live, Tim?) TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F000FMGJHG3EMG40HI661C1F

Ted, >> (Where do you live, Tim?) I live in Southern Illinois, specifically Carbondale. That's where IL comes to a tip at the bottom, only closer to the Mississippi River. It's roughly the same latitude as Norfolk, VA. If I'm not mistaken, you live in New Hampshire some where? I really like that area, I'm originally from the Utica, NY area, and have spent alot of time in New England. Getting back to that "pea-green/powdery-brown blotchy look"………I wonder what is the best or most versatile "paint" program for this type of material creation. I managed to lose your msg. listing the ones you mostly use. (I thought it was Auto-Filed). I'm going to start renaming them with words that mean something to me, those numbers get confusing. Take care and Thanks, TIM

Tim I'll check out Carbondale on the map. Sounds like a lot of history associated with a town of that name I really don't know of any one "best" program for creating maps. Altamira Composer is one that is best for me to create "technical" maps, but Fractal Painter might be my favorite program for 2D images. I've always liked to sketch and paint and Painter is so easy to create those effects and it's a lot of fun. Animator Pro is best for animated maps and many quick and dirty images. There has been messages on CIS of Composer being offered for $150 and I'd highly recommend it if you can find it. I'll look at your file tomorrow. TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F0006MGHHIP0ECD

Ted, >>Altamira Composer is one that is best for me to create "technical" maps, but………… What is a "technical" map? I wish there were a way to play with some of these "paint" and/or bitmap programs before purchase, like test driving a car. It's not like you can resell it if you find something else that you like better. Yeh, Carbondale's got some history (mostly related to SIU and coal minning, as well as the WPA project), but nothing like NYC <g>. This used to be part of the dust bowl until they made a bunch of lakes. Now it's so humid in the summer, you can't wear socks. BTW, how's the aerobics coming along? I'm going to Mempis May 5-7 to the Blues Fest which is part of the annual "Memphis in May". I hope to talk to B.B., I haven't seen him in about 10 years. I hear he's got his own club there now. Wish me luck. Tim

Tim, PMJI, but it sounds like you are either a professor or a student at my alma mater. (Can't think of any other reason someone would hang around in Carbondale!) We lived down there for 5 years while I went to SIU. I loved the weather and the surrounding areas (like Giant City and the spillway in murpheesboro) I'm up here in NH with Ted now (well, not exactly _with_, but you know what I mean!) Any chance you're in the Architecture program? Bob W. class of '92

Bob Small world!! You'll have to tell me all about the spillway sometime<g>. TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F0007MGHHG45D104

Bob, Somehow a msg. to you from Ted came to me. I can't send it but it reads as follows: Bob, Small world!! You'll have to tell me all about the spillway sometime <g> -Ted B. >>PMJI, but it sounds like you are either a professor or a student at my alma mater. What is PMJI? I was a student in the Product Design Department, but took AutoCAD 1,2,+3 at the School of Architecture and Interior Design with John Davey. I graduated in Dec. '90. >>(Can't think of any other reason someone would hang around in Carbondale!) I can't believe I'm still here either! Must be the weather. I'm thinking of trying out the new Multimedia program at the CAD Institute in Pheonix. I'm having some serious trouble finding a job in Product Design. (Especially in this area). But I really love working with computer modeling, rendering, and animation. A BA in MM might help?? Take care, TIM

Ted, >>Maybe you had forgotten to do a Materials/Update at some point?<< I don't know of any Materials/Update branch command in the 3DE. I Put it to the scene and saved everything, including the library. I'm trying it again with a combination of different texture maps and specular maps. In the ME the sample sphere looks "pretty" good. Part of the problem was that the bitmap needed to be scaled down a little. I tried a Bitmap/region fit but it wouldn't let me. (Invalid operation msg.) It just makes no sence to me. I've read the tutorials on the ME, read the ME chapters in "Inside 3D Studio, and the reference manual chapter on the ME. I also have a book on lighting and materials by Michele Bosquet. It all seems pretty straight forward, I hope something sinks in. I'll try it again, and if I get the same results, I'll send it all your way so you can see what I mean. You were right about the text, the faces just needed to fe flipped. I always render this particular image with the Force two-sided button on because the base of the lamp won't render right otherwise. I may try rebuilding it in 3DS. Thanks for looking, TIM

Tim I think the command in 3DE is, Surface/Materials/Assign/Update to make sure everything is the same as in the ME. On looking at the model, a good approach might be to use 2 materials, one for the original material and another for the patina. Use them as Texture1 and Texture 2 and try something like Refmap.gif in the masking slot of Texture1. This will make the base material show through according to the luminance value of Refmap.gif. Experiment!! The model looks very good, by the way. >>I also have a book on lighting and materials by Michele Bosquet. It all seems pretty straight forward<< That's a very good reference, but lighting is anything but straight forward<BG> Good luck TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F0007MGHHI409AA0
