#SOUNDSCAPE 1.4
6 messages in this thread
Listen, while I have you here, let me ask you this: what procedure do you use
for moving DMCS instruments over to SoundScape? So far I've had to hack and
slash anything I wanted to move in that direction. Have you come across a
straightforward method, by any chance?
Rick
Rick,
I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong idea. I have never moved any DMCS
instruments over to SS. My questions of the past were only whether the
instruments on the DMCS musicks were any better than the ones supplied on the
DMCS program disk (which are, being kind, underwhelming).
I use the DMCS instruments only while scoring music in DMCS to get it into
the computer, and then transfer the scores to SS for further editing and MIDI
use.
I have not had much time to hack the Amiga yet. I want to, but I first have
some application work to do with it, which was the main reason that I got the
machine. Isn't it funny how there is so little time for the fun things in
life?
David
No problem, David. You didn't give me the wrong idea at all. It's just that
I was burned again earlier this week, and since I was thinking about it I
thought I'd ask. At least it got the thread going. 8)
I do the same as you: score in DMCS, then port to SoundScape… and that's
where the gotcha is. Usually I score for mostly MIDI instruments, but
occasionally I'll want to use a sample on the Amiga side in the mix.
Let me ask you this one, then: have you ever had a circumstance where one of
the tracks didn't transer from DMCS to SoundScape?
Rick
Rick,
No, I haven't had the problem in sending thr tracks down, except when I
forget to enable the send MIDI clock in DMCS. I always have to pull out the
"Mimentos" and look it up if I haven't done it for a while. I honestly can't
remember now, but, I think that I might close the Midi Clock window
beforehand to avoid interference between the SS clock and the DMCS clock. You
might experiment with that.
Here's one for you – have you found a way to get DMCS tempo changes to record
in SoundScape?
I just had another thought on the track transfer. Do you send more than one
DMCS staff per MIDI channel? That causes problems, I believe.
David
The problems you are describing are not the same as the one I occasionally
see and was asking about.
I tried driving SS from the DMCS clock as you suggested, but I always found
that to be a bit limiting. Instead, I usually let SoundScape "free run" just
as if I were playing live on a MIDI keyboard, then flip to the DMCS screen
and start the playback. Of course this way you don't have any sort of
relationship between the SoundScape clock ticks and the notes being recorded
as you would if you were playing to the metronome or if you were driving it
from the DMCS clock, but as long as the record clock rate is high enough this
is not a problem. I also usually have to go in and edit out the several
second pause at the start of the sequence, but again this is no problem.
Anyway, if you try it this way you'll find that your retards/accelerandos
record just fine.
The problem I've seen occasionally is that I'll have a batch of MIDI tracks
and one or two Ami sound tracks; when I port it over to SoundScape the Ami
tracks don't get recorded.
Rick
Rick,
I've tried in the past to work with the SS clock, but never had any success.
I just assumed that it couldn't be done, but since you've gotten it to work
I'll try again. Maybe my SS clock speed was too slow.
I don't understand your comment that you have a batch of MIDI tracks and one
or 2 Ami sound tracks. Do you mean that in DMCS you have Ami tracks and MIDI
tracks at the same time, or, do you mean that you have some MIDI tracks
already in Soundscape and then try to record tracks from DMCS by assigning
them to MIDI channels and recording in SS? To the best of my knowledge, the
only way from DMCS to SS is via MIDI channels. I have experienced problems
with DMCS and a SS module both trying to own the MIDI device at the same
time. In fact, DMCS seems to want to own SS's MIDI OUT and MIDI IN modules
whether or not you have them connected to the patch panel. I've tried to do a
hardware loop back, with DMCS going to MIDI OUT and SS recording MIDI IN, and
couldn't get it to work. I find that the safest method is to do nothing but
the transfer with DMCS and SS together, and then rebooting and going into SS
by itself for any further work. They seem to tolerate each other a little
bit, but not too much.
Any comments? David
