#Help! with Quantum Q280

Ben, if my memory serves me correctly, you have some experience with a
Quantum Q280 disk drive. I have one installed on a C= 2090 controller and I
have the first partition working but not the second. Have you
any idea how to specify the Q280 to hddisk.device in the MountList. I have
no specs on the drive, and any info you have (heads, cyls (822, I think),
etc.) would be helpful. Thanks.

The info you need is the total number of blocks available on the drive.
Divide that number by a conveneint number of heads and blocks per track and
make up your mountlist accordingly. I have not tried 2 heads yet but
probably will the next time that I format a drive from scratch. You will
have to mount RES2: as well as the partition that you are trying to format. I
don't know why but for some reason format picks up the starting cly ok but
misses the fact that this number will probably be larger than the number of
cyls to go unless RES2: is mounted. 73, bill
I got it. Thanks to suggestions from you and Don Curtis. I don't have drive
specs, but the automatic allocations from PREP can be worked backwards.
Here's how… Info on the first (automatic) partition shows 98988 blocks
(82326 in use, 16662 free). There are also 2 reserved blocks on the first
partition for a total of 98990 blocks on that partition. That partition is
521 cyls (2-522). Dividing 98990 by 521 gives 190 blocks per cylinder. I
adjusted the blocks per track from the more standard 17 to 19 and assumed 10
surfaces. Format worked like a dream then. Thanks for your assistance.

OK, you are quite welcome. I had the same sort of problem with a Micropolis
1375 drive. Because of this "strangeness" in having to mount the "preped"
partition, I suspect that it is not possible to change the number head for
one or two partitions (wanted to set up one or two imitation floppies without
wasting any space). Next time I get in there to play around I will probably
try it. I know that you can do that with the C-LTD controller but doubt it
is possible with the 2090. 73, bill
No – with a Quantum 80s, not a Q280 – unless they are one and the same.
