Who says you have to?? As your online message reading skill grows you will
doubtless learn to breeze right past quotes that you do not need. If this
communication was vocal and folks quoted quotes you'd have little choice but to
listen through it if you wished to remain in the conversation. But since the
messages are written skilled readers can quickly scan to the dialog that they
await (if any).
Now, how long did it take you to grasp the quote at the beginning of this
note? If you read it word for word and considered it likewise you are indeed in
trouble <g>. Other readers, though, may need to read more carefully in order to
understand my message. Also, without the quote I'd likely have spend just as
many words establishing what my response was aimed at.

The way you quoted in your CI$ message was fine. That ought to be sufficient as
a reminder, but verbatim quoting of _everything_ that's gone before is the
irritating part. Sure I don't have to actually _read_ it, but I _do_ have to
pay for the download (and the phone call) plus network surcharges if it's the
'wrong' time of day.
Just in case, it's the Internet we're talking about here and not Compuserve.
There are lots of things, that I skip past on CI$, but at least it's _new_ text
coming through on the downloads.

Hey, I didn't mean to imply that I don't understand, Adrian. In fact I do,
especially where obvious laziness is involved.
"Some" individuals are simply too lazy to piecemeal their quoting. Properly
done, piecemeal quoting quite often _shortens_ the amount of overall text.
Piecemeal can simply be one sentence or phrase that cue's the memory of
readers, or several quotes tiered into the text body as appropriate. We all
know, do we not, that simple cut and pasting of the entire message being
replied too is significantly easier and often quicker than carefully selecting
the appropriate parts. Selecting appropriate phrases requires additional mental
activity on the part of the writer.

PS: You know, we have a lot of whiners here on CompuServe. Most of them are
concerned with anything that pads their bills. Hey, I understand even though I
can easily afford any amount of CIS'ing, but some of 'em pad the bills of
others via their whining. Heck, they often whine about sign-offs, humor, and
even, <shameface>, post scripts.

I hope my last few messages didn't give the impression of whining. That wasn't
what I intended. I was just trying to show what I had experienced with the
Internet mailing lists I was a member of from time to time. You'll learn a lot
from reading the lists, it just takes time<g>, which there's always never
enough of.

No problem, Adrian. If any problem, it was probably mine. You see, I
have endured a great deal of whining about message quotes from numerous
individuals. Ironically, I've often lost sight of what whiner's were talking
about due to _their_ lack of quoting cue's <G>. Hey, I carry on quite a number
of conversations at any given time.

Multitasking eh<bg>? I've cut my CI$ forums down a bit recently, but they're
still in the 15 to 20 range although I don't visit them all every day.
