Gee Michael,
Thanks for your answer, but I think you misunderstood me. I want to
use my 60 odd PS fonts, not my CG fonts. I know the difference
between CG & PS, I just don't understand how I get PgS to print my
Ppage PS fonts (which all started life as type 1 & can go back to
there). You say the screen font files need a PFS header. Now you say
I can't make PSF files, or rather you don't give me the secret, or
point me to a file that tells me how. People are doing it, so there
must be some documentation. This, after I've read for years how much
easier & better the font system in PgS was compared to Pp ;^}. You
wonder why I'm confused & frustrated!!!!

Speaking of confusion. I can't help you with the problem but I also
thought that you were asking how to use the CG fonts so S-L was not the
only one to missinterpret.

Gracia: I did miunderstand you then. I thought you asked how to use your Gold
Disk Compugraphic fonts with PageStream. If you meant how to use the .PS files
they use for downloading, you can't.
PSF files cannot be created on the Amiga. There is an Atari program, but we are
not porting it to the Amiga because we are getting rid of them in the next
version. No PSF files have ever been created on the amiga unless someone hacked
an existing one with newzap.
All the PSF file does is tell PageStream the name of the .PS file to download.
It has nothing at all to do with the screen fonts. The fontequivv2 file is used
to link various font files that aren't necessarily in the same format. For
example, a CG font and its accompaning .PSF file are not in the same format,
but the fontequivv2 file can be used to link them together. (This is all
documented in past issues of our newsletter that we send to users.)
The problem is with the nature of Compugraphic fonts. They are
completely incompatible with PostScript printers are this time. There
is no way to print a CG font to a PS printer. None. ProPage and PgS
both get around this problem by downloading equivalent PostScript
files. Gold Disk has a utility to make a .PS downloadable file, but
that system only works on GD fonts. We provide the .PS/.PSF files for
the CG Garamond font that comes with PgS, but we have always told
users that CG fonts are incompatible with PS printers, otherwise.
The .PS files that you got with your CG fonts are not normal, editable
font files, and cannot be used by other programs.
As I said in my last message, we are working on 3.0 so that it will
print _all_ CG fonts to PostScript printers without the user having
to worry about it. But until 3.0, there is no other solution.

Again, I don't think you understand my question (but neither did Bill
Leach, so maybe I don't do good modem speak). I guess I'll have to break
down and call on Mon. It should be easier to comunicate by phone, though
more expensive. But then so is $165 for a useless (for me) program.

I've been using PageStream for a long time now, Michael, and have only once
(about 15 months ago) received a newsletter. How often do they come out? Why
don't I receive them? Are back issues available? Most important question of
all (if I've missed something) – can you send me back issues?

Shraddan: issue 5 was the last one we sent out. Issue 6 is going to press now.
I think we have copies of maybe 2 in stock. (Lots of one particular issue for
some reason or other.)

Jumping in here…
I share your predicament, and even have the same printer. Back in the days
when I had my old Laserjet clone, I created a lot of CG files from Type 1
files, then zapped the Type 1 files. "Why duplicate them?" I thought. "I
don't need them anyway." There just isn't any way to get them back.
I solved a lot of my problems with the Amiga in general by buying a
Bridgeboard setup, and I have FontMonger on the PC side. But even
FontMonger will not create Type 1 files from CG files. (It will create
them from Final Copy's Nimbus Q fonts, though.)
There are a whole bunch of Type 1 fonts in archives on Soft-Logik's forum
on another network. Maybe Mark or Michael could post them here. These
fonts are from a CD-ROM of pd and shareware fonts and, while the quality
is uneven, some of them are quite good. You can also get disks of fonts
from Dragon Graphics (Mark's company, I believe.). They used to be $5 per
disk, and come with a brochure showing the actual font. The DTP forum on
CI$ is a good source of fonts. A drawback is that they are mostly not
archived, so you have to download them one by one. This can be time
consuming.
I think that the problem with converting CG fonts to Type 1 has something
to do with Agfa's policy regarding their proprietary fonts – not the Amiga
and not the font.
When I really HAVE to use one of the CG fonts, I just print in normal HP4
mode – not PostScript.

Thanks for your imput. (I alway read & learn from your messages) I,
however, NEVER zap anything <G>; I still have Amiga DOS 1.0 (1985!) & all
the 1.2 Betas!! I keep every master disk I get, you never know. BTW
TypeSmith will creat Type 1 .PFB & .AFM files from CG fonts.
I have been using only PS (though in type 3 Ppage form) since I got the
HP4m. My basic problem with PgS was I didn't know which files to put in
what dir to get PS (& screen) output. I had a long talk (voice) with Mark
& got that all straight (he's great). Very simple; .PFB & .AFM in same dir
and if you can figure out their path system <G> switch over. Now instead
of putting all those ProStream fonts in at once, I can pick & choose.
